I was told by a friend that he's allergic to "generic" meds and has to only take the "real deal". so, my question is: what exactly makes it generic?

it depends on his definition of "allergic".

Some people get a rash or reaction from certain dyes used by different drug manufacturers.

If he's talking about full-blown anaphylaxis, it's likely he's full of shite and wants brand narcotics and schedule II's because they sell for more on the street.

your friend is full of shite, only drug addicts say that crap. There is no statistically significant difference, same drug

Brand names typically do all of the research and development then get a patent.

They charge high prices to recover the research costs and they corner the market with the patent.

Once the patent expires, the generics then mass produce the drug at a lower price typically with some small differences.

That's idiotic. Generic prescriptions are the exact same formula. I believe generics are made after the patent expires so it's not longer limited to the one brand. I'm no pharmacist though.

a brand name drug is made my by a manufacturer that had to put millions and millions of dollars into research and development of the drug.... for this, they are given a patent of 21 years, from the date the application is submitted....

after their patent expires, they no longer have exclusive rights to that drug, and other companies can then make it... these companies then make their non-brand name a.k.a "generic" drug without having to recoup millions of dollars in R&D...

thanks to legislation passed in 1971, the generic version has to be bio-therapeuticly equivalent, have the same side effect profile, same effect, work in the same time frame, etc. to even make it to a pharmacy's shelf.... so in effect, the "generic" drug must be the EXACT same as the "brand" drug...

Is he lactose intolerant? Because lactose is used as a filler in a ton to drugs.

He might mean he needs compounding. But he might just be an idiot.
