Bit of backstory... My son's 12 yr old pug finally passed away last Thursday night. We'd had her since she was a pup and he was a toddler. Basically, they grew up together. Needless to say, he was pretty devastated when he work up Friday morning and saw her laying there in her bed right next to his.

Now my wife has found a lady she works with who has a litter of Catahoula/Lab mix puppies and she said my son can have one from the litter free of charge. Right now all I know about the litter is they'd different colors and one is leopard print. I know labs are great dogs but I don't know anything about the Catahoula or a mix of this breed with a lab. Does anyone here have one of these who can give me some insight?

TIA

I had a catahoula/shepherd mix. He was a great looking dog, white with about 4 different shades of brown. Very good, but stubborn. Incredibly smart. My favorite dog before my lab/rot mix.

He was was my best bud when I was young, very good with kids. We also had a little shitzu back then, and she alpha'd his arse. He was great with other dogs as well. Protective, so the socialization was a must. Not sure if that's the catahoula or the shepherd.

I think just about any lab mix is going to be a good dog. Give us some pics.

I have a female Catahoula who is nearing 4 years old

She trees squirrels, tracks deer, and cuddles up at night

She has zero aggression to human strangers. She is somewhat hyper around strangers, but it is all play.

With other dogs, it is hit or miss. Sometimes she is sweet wanting to play, and sometimes she is stand offish.

Potty training was extremely easy as well

They are extremely loyal dogs and like to expend copious amounts of energy running and playing. That will be a good fit for a young fella like your son. If he takes up squirrel or rabbit hunting in his teens -- even better, that dog would be a great companion for that type of activity.

From what I'm reading, they look to be great dogs.

Will do. The lady said this litter is 4 weeks old so it may be another couple weeks before we need to take them from their momma.

My son will be all over that. One more thing though is we've got a male Shih tzu/poodle mix that's a little over 2 years old. He's my 7 yr old daughter's dog. Right now we can tell he's not quite himself wondering where the pug has gone. He's usually pretty good with other dogs, usually doing better around females than males though.

I don't think you could go wrong with that combo. Catahoulas are smart, very loyal dogs that aren't very aggressive. They are used as bay dogs so they have a tendency to bark at other animals or anything that spooks them.

Luckily the Catahoula is a puppy and will have some time to win over the poodle mix.

Yeah, the poodle mix can be a bit territorial, but usually only with other males. But from the way he was acting this morning, I can tell he's lonely now that the pug has died. When we got up this morning, he immediately ran upstairs to my son's room and started sniffing around the Pug's bed and even crawled under my son's bed looking for her. He's also been not is usual hyper self over the weekend. I'm hoping that when we bring the puppy in, he'll be glad to have some dog company again.
