60 pound lab mix. Gave him a rawhide bone and he was chewing on the remaining piece (about 1 1/2 or so in length) and all the sudden it disappeared and he started whimpering.

I looked down his mouth and didnt see anything, and when I touched his neck he whined. This lasted maybe a minute. Now he's acting completely fine, and when I rub along his neck he doesn't mind it.

My concern is intestinal blockage. Will something like a rawhide be digested in time normally? What should I be on the lookout for as far as symptoms go?

And yes, I am aware that the cops will come handle the issue for me but I'd rather he live.

If he got it down, he should be fine.

If there is a blockage, he will quit eating.

Consult your vet.

I do plan on doing that in the morning, but it's 11pm on Thanksgiving, so I figured bothering the OT was more appropriate than bothering our vet.

Call your vet and watch the dog. They don't really digest it so pay attention and see if it's having trouble going to the bathroom. It will eventually dissolve but too large a piece could cause problems.

Negative. A little further north. Boston.

I was drinking an Abita Amber when I created my account in 2008 and I'm not very creative. Hence the name.

Avoid rawhides, they can cause too many problems. There are better treats out there that will breakdown better.

Yeah that was a bit of a scare so no more rawhides.

They don't. It dissolves in the stomach eventually. They don't digest it like normal food.

Don't rawhides soften and become pliable the longer they are exposed to moisture? Wouldn't that allow the dog to pass it?

It does but if the piece is too big it can cause blockage. OP said he could feel it n the neck. That's a pretty good chunk.

Sorry, to clarify, I couldn't actually feel the rawhide in his neck. When I rubbed his neck, it clearly hurt him, but I didn't feel anything.
