12 months ago, we adopted a great pup from the SPCA and she came with all of her shots.

What shots does she need besides rabies?
Any prices / estimates from my fellow dog owners is appreciated.

53 lb mutt
Age: 2 years old

The vet I went to is a Douchey price gouger so I want to get my facts straight before dealing with him again. Thx OT

Where are you located? Try to find a vet that will run titers. Too many vets continue to give unnecessary shots just to make money.

What area are you in - I've been going to Helouin for 25+ years. They are very reasonable with their prices and very experienced vets. They do pets and a good many farm animals as well.

Canine distemper
Canine parvovirus
Canine adenovirus 1 infection
Bordatella if you board them.

There are some required shots, like rabies, and a number of should get shots, like, heartworm that are offered.
It's not just a shot a vet will provide, but also an annual checkup. It can depend totally on how much gets checked. Around here in Alabama, a basic annual checkup is around $100, maybe less.
From what I've found, vet prices seem to be highest in areas of town which are more affluent.

Distemper , parvovirus, Leptospirosis, adenovirus , parainfluenza, Bordatella, Rabies. Also, make sure you get your dog heartworm checked and on prevention. You’ll be paying more and regretting it in the long run if you don’t.

Get a 3 year DHPP and 3 year rabies shot, put it on heartworm prevention once a month, and you should be good to go.

Vets who also see farm animals tend to be more reasonably priced. I use a vet in Coushatta, La. - great guy and he takes care of my dogs well.

My Aussie Shepherd used to hate him - first visit he did the fecal check and she snarled and growled and made it clear that she wasn't going to peacefully take that intrusion by a stranger.

I've heard good things about these guys and I've reached the point where I'm tired of my vet tattooing me for hundreds every time I go into the clinic. Think I'm making the switch.

Annual checkup is definitely recommended, but do not blindly agree to annual vaccinations. A lot of vets still use the "annual shots" dribble to get your pet in the door. Look up the 2011 AAHA vaccination guidelines and ask your prospective vet if they follow them. Most core vaccines probably confer immunity for life, and vets should agree to do titers or at least push revaccination out to every 3 years or so.

It's also worth remembering that vets don't usually receive any insurance payments. I think this is why people think vets price gouge. They compare their pet's medical bills to their own insurance subsidized bills that are often lower.
