We are looking to adopt a rescue dog. I spoke with the rescue people on Friday, and they highly recommend crating a new dog. I have no experience with this; my dogs have always had the freedom to roam the house. Or, I would use a baby gate to hold the dog in a hallways to limit any damage. I'm reading mixed reviews on crating online. What's your experience with this?

Crate a dog if it isn't housebroken. If it's housebroken, then regular training techniques are good enough.

What breed is it?

Most dogs appreciate the security of a kennel. But there are a million factors.

I have one relaxed lab and one crazy mutt/mix.

The lab will go to her crate to nap and doesn't mind being locked in it.

The crazy mutt will go in the crate on command and will not protest unless someone new is in the house.

Just don't use it for punishment and all is good.

Dogs equal today's SJW college kids. They like their safe spaces.

We're looking at a boxer, which is the only breed of dog I've ever owned. I guess I'm worried about the dog being stuck in a crate while we're at work, which would be about 6 hours a day.

I crated my dog for two years while he was a puppy and chewed everything up. Whenever I had to leave him alone, I put him in the crate. At night, I put him in the crate. When he was bad, I put him in the crate. Didn't take long for him to go crate on command.

After a couple years I got rid of the actual crate and used a dogbed in the laundry room as his crate. He still goes there for all reasons mentioned above.

I have always crate trained my Aussies to housebreak them, when I am gone and at night. Some dogs like the security and some hate them, after housebreaking either leave it up if they like it or store it if they don't.

The crate is a tool to help with housebreaking.

It isn't punishment. The dog will grow to love it.

You only need to do this for first few weeks. Then you can expand his area with the kid gates. Its for house training purposes mainly.

PS - I agree with above, dog finds comfort in the crate after a short while and will often take naps in it on his own with the door open.

Sounds to me like you might want to adopt a different dog. The dog may have anxiety issues and just throwing it into a new, unfamiliar environment where you're gone 6 hours a day just doesn't sound like the ownership it needs.

Boxers are high energy dogs. You know this. It's better off in a back yard and being checked on intermittently.

This. Get earplugs to sleep as they will whine all night. Doesn't take long for them to get over it though.

So you know nothing about boxers then?

What a completely idiotic statement.

I wasn't planning on crating the dog at night. Is it possible to day crate, but leave them out at night?

most dogs just lay around looking out of the fence when their owner's aren't there. Just be sure to run it or throw something in the morning before work and shouldn't be any problem.

Any particular reason you say this?

We were considering a boxer for our next dog. I love the look of brindle boxers.

we did this for a few days, but I couldn't stand leaving her in crate for 9+ hours during the day while we were at work

we then did this for a few weeks to see how she would react while we were gone. After about a month we felt comfortable enough to let her roam the house while we're gone. We've had her almost 2 years and she's never tore anything up or had an accident.
