Every time I take my dogs to the vet, they suggest dental cleanings. They aren't cheap, they have to put the dog under anesthesia, and sometimes have to pull multiple teeth.

So my question for the OT is, is this legit, or a money making racket by the vets? How often should it be done? Is it worth doing on 2 ten year old dogs?

Vet told me the same thing last week. Estimate is close to $1000. Not sure if legit either.

Have a 14 year old hound, pulled a tooth and she seems perkier now.

It is expensive tho.

I have typically had this done once every 5 years. I figure it should be done once in a while.

Dogs have been fine for centuries without toothbrushes.

Shoot. Human dental cleanings are a scam.

Small dogs are more prone to teeth issues and periodontal disease. Left untreated could cause major issues including death.

My dog only trusts dogs with her dentistry. Says the human dentists don't have a clue what they are doing

It is legit. It shouldn’t be 1k like the poster above said unless there are a lot of narly teeth that need to be pulled. Most people wait til it’s too late to have it done and by that point there are 4 teeth that are practically rotting out of their shitzus mouth and its breath smells like death.

Legit. As another poster stated, smaller dogs need it regularly. If a tooth goes bad, it can lead to infection, causing multiple problems, possibly death. Anesthesia is a big chunk of the cost unfortunately.

I don’t think it’s worth it. Esp if it’s an older dog. Putting older dogs under anesthesia is risky. I’d only do that unless it was absolutely necessary.

Legit.... like humans, dental health has a direct correlation to cardiac and overall health.

Recently went through this. My vet quoted $1000. Called Siegen Lane Vet - he did it for $270. Frequent Greenies are supposed to help once cleaning is done.

I would imagine if you, a dog groomer or whoever, brushes the dogs teeth every few months, you can potentially avoid the "dental cleaning" at the vet.

The cleaning is legit but the price isn't. That's the scam.

A lot of illness with dogs can stem from their teeth

Tell us how you’ll do that. He prefers crest?

My vet told me to use a nickel to scrape them but doesn’t really work well for rear teeth

It's legit for a treatment, but it's a scam at $1000. I know Allpets tries to charge that much. Should cost you around 250.
