There’s a myth out there that darker roast coffee offers more caffeine but I’m starting to think other wise. Light roast supposedly offers the same, if not more, of a boost and tastes sweeter. The difference in roast just determines how bold or sweet it is. I always thought the roast determined how much caffeine. What is y’all’s experience?

I'm pretty sure the roast doesn't affect the caffeine content at all.

Let’s dispel the most common myth right off the bat: A dark-roasted bean contains more caffeine than a light-roasted bean due to its stronger flavor. Not true. Actually, the caffeine content in both is virtually the same. An opposing view held by many is that the darker the roast level, the lower a bean’s caffeine since much of it is lost or "burned off" during roasting. Yet caffeine changes very little during a roast. Any significant variation would require a roasting temperature above 600° F. Since temperatures rarely exceed 470° F, a bean’s caffeine content remains relatively static across all roast levels.

Technically, the longer you roast a bean the less caffeine it has

Darker roasts are traditionally weaker. As with anything, there are exceptions.

Light roast of the same bean has more caffeine.

At least that's what I've always heard.

*takes a sip of light roast now.*

This is what I have heard about this topic. Haven't ever cared enough to look into it though.

I believe the science shows lighter roasts preserve more caffeine where the dark roast process reduces caffeine. People think the "stronger" taste means "stronger" coffee in terms of caffeine. People also think lots of dumb things.

That makes sense though because you’re roasting out the caffeine in the bean. Hmm

I think it's the same caffeine content. The difference in the roasts is something about density.

That's what the internet told me at least.

No, the longer coffee beans are roasted, the more caffeine they lose. Lighter roasts have more pick me up, but lack the flavor. I like a good medium roast or Italian roast. Italian is the lightest of the dark roasts.

Yeah! I’ve been drinking the breakfast blend 2x caffeine k-cup for the past several days and it’s been great. Tastes great and gives me a non jittery energy most of the morning.

Very true, but I'm in a hurry so it's a double-shot of espresso then hoping traffic to the office is clear or it's a photo finish to the toilet.
