I've never had to pay for a phone monthly. It's usually free or 59 bucks

They don't make you. You can pay for it upfront. But it's 0% interest.

You must have had some crappy phones. Nowadays if you want a decent smartphone....you are paying for them. Yes...ATT offers the NEXT plan which is you basically paying for just the cost of the phone monthly.

No, they don't make you, but it is an option.

You can also pay a lot less up front if you are eligible for an upgrade and renew your contract.

You were paying monthly for the phone it just wasn't separated from your service charge. Now the service and cost of the phone are separate.

I think you still may be able to upgrade the traditional way with AT&T but most carriers are doing away with that and providing 0% financing on phones.

Has the price for service gone down?

This. When the NEXT plan first came out, people were upset about the monthly phone payment adding up to way more than what it used to cost to "upgrade" your phone. But if you have the NEXT plan, your actual service plan is much cheaper.

I'm not on ATT anymore, but we did the NEXT plan before I got rid of it because the numbers made the monthly total still less than what it was buying phones outright at the upgrade price + service plan.

Yeah, most are doing this now instead of the discount phone with a 2 year deal. Instead it is the $25 a month phone payment deal. Unless you want to pay the full cost of the phone up front.
