Seems like people just propped him up for a long time and he never was really the best of his genre at any point in time.

Pretty sure "It's All Gone, Pete Thong" was inspired by him.

Saw him at my first party. He was playing upstairs in the State Palace in 99 (yes, I'm old). I saw him several times back in my raving days, and he was a big deal back then. Is Tiesto still popular? I still actually listen to his stuff from time to time.

you talking about the 'jungle room'

Goat time in Nola..... shite I didnt realize I was that young. 13 years old at the first freak fest if it was really in '95.. I had the poster from it for the longest time. I actually collected them sorta as a teen explains some things I suppose

One early Sunday morning I was a amat state palace and saw my 10th grade algebra teacher's son OD from over dancing and sweating. I was in her class that next morning and she was a wreck. No one knew her son OD'd and I didn't tell anyone I saw it.

Blast from the past
But I hadn't heard anyone mention Oakenfold in forever. No telling what Donnie Disco and disco productions paid him to perform.... I remember crystal method was another hot one.

One year Mystikal jumped on stage during a rave with Manning Fresh who jumped on the ones and twos spinning techno music, I was rollin my balls to the wall

Skill wise, he was never the best and was/is downright atrocious in the mid 2000s and currently.

Tranceport will always be a classic and arguably the goat Trance cd.

Probably not much, compared to today's standards. I would imagine he paid more at his house of Blues show in 2001.

He occasionally posts on the music board if you wanted an actual answer

He peaked in 2001 with his Silence remix feat Sarah McGlock

When the internet was in infancy there was this site that parties rated DJ's, & he always was #1 there IIRC ... Tiesto, Van Buren, DJ Icey, Carl Cox, George Acosta are others that come to mind

Dude's mixing skills were always garbage. Locals could mix circles around him. Never understood how he got away with $20k appearance fees.

I don't know wtf oakenfold is but I'm pretty sure trashiness is involved somehow.

Almost every popular song has a remix by each of the big dj's. Oakenfold isn't known for his silence remix. The tiesto version of silence is the famous version and probably most people's introduction to tiesto.

This.

And the dude would jump up and down and make gestures as if he were the one making all of the sounds.

He played the tracks that the masses wanted to hear. He was not interested into opening up the prog heads into anything new. The trance lovers were more into him.

He was a lot of fun at Mardi Gras '01 at the HOB, but I have seen far better DJ's than him (Sasha, Kleinenberg, Nick Warren, Pascal Feos, Anthony Pappa, Derrick Carter and the best DJ I ever had the pleasure of seeing in NYC at the old Club Vinyl -- Danny motherfricking Tenaglia).
