But there's a lot of really cool places outside of the South where the people are awesome as well.

Absolutely. People in the UK were very friendly. Extremely sarcastic but friendly nonetheless. The midwest and pacific northwest have some pretty chill people as well.

all i know is the part of the state i'm from is considered to be different from the rest of the state i'm from.

i guess we are the crunchy rednecks who spend a lot of time on the beach? On the coast... on the bay... whatever.

at least i don't live in some dry county where the bible thumpers run the town.

Unfortunately you have dipshits who automatically call you a bigot for "being proud" of being from the South. Those people are what's wrong with this country, not a fricking flag.

Well, white pride and southern pride are synonymous for much of the country and you can really blame the assholes of the KKK for that one. I don't think that having Southern Pride makes you a racist, plenty of black people are super proud of being from the South as well.

I'm just curious because I don't really feel any sort of connection to Mississippi or Alabama, except for occasionally being butthurt when we're all lumped together as inbred rednecks.

It is hard going to places in the Northeast because being from the South, we really are taught to be friendly and polite and that's not really the case everywhere. I smile at strangers when we make eye contact and people up north think I'm trying to frick them or something because of it. Sorry my mama raised me right.

Sure. That's true.

The thing is, this idea of Southern pride is nothing more than a banding together response and a larger scale version of regional competition.

In LA, if you are above I-10, the joke is that you are basically Arkansas or Texas.

On an even smaller scale, New Iberia and St. Martinville people seem to compete against each other.

This exists everywhere.

You simply see the idea of Southern pride as a bigger example because it involves a larger piece of real estate.

Hell, how often do you hear Americans say that all other countries suck in comparison? American pride!

We are a competitive species. "Warfare" is in our blood.

I'm of the opinion that one should reserve "pride" for something they actually achieve. An accident of birth doesn't warrant chest pounding in my opinion.

most of the pride is just coping due to a primarily crap existence

shite schools, outrageous insurance, poverty roads, fat, ignorant people, who drive excessively large trucks to carry around 2 lb fishing poles.

just lol

This is true. Holding doors open, saying "sir" and "ma'am", smiling and greeting everyone you meet.

That is looked at as strange in much of the North and other areas.

I never thought much of it until I went to a college where 85 - 90% of the students were from the Northeast, Midwest, or West Coast. I heard a fair amount of ridiculous crap about the South, and it grinds you down after a while. It started as a defense mechanism, and then it blossomed to something resembling pride.

I don't identify whatsoever with Confederate flag types, but I do think the South does some things the right way.

I always thought people were lying when they said women outside of the South go crazy when a guy opens the door for them. Until I visited London and you would have thought I was some amazing gentleman with how the girls reacted. Immediately asked my name, where I was from and what I was doing. All because I opened a door and had a southern accent.

I get what you're saying. I definitely have a Southern Louisiana bias but outside of that, I do defend the U.S. but I guess the South as a whole just doesn't get me hard.

Well being from Southern Louisiana, Cajun Country, has definitely helped to mold me into the person I am. I think it's perfectly warranted to be proud of my immediate culture and the community that I work to hopefully improve.

Aren't you from the South Bend area, brah?

That place has absolutely no place to talk any negative word about anywhere in this country.
