77 down votes seems pretty excessive

My family didn't come across the ocean until turn of the century, so the Revolutionary and Civil Wars were already fought and won when we arrived. BUT, we were quickly immersed into South Louisiana's culture, and, in a larger sense, into the culture of the South. So, even though my ancestors were more worried about Nazis and avoiding large ovens, I felt a definite sense of pride, camaraderie, and community
If your family came over at the turn of the century (I'm assuming 1900 because you mention being in LA in the 1990's) why were they worried about Nazi concentration camps?

I could give two shits where I was born....be that the north or the south. I'm am who I've made myself and have pride in my family and how I was raised, not something I have zero control over that happened by chance.
The only people I know who talk about where they're from all the time (city or state) like they have a sense of pride about something that happened by chance are rappers, trashy people, and inmates in a prison.
This is the only right answer, and disagreeing is straight up ignorance.

I'll bite, yes I have Southern pride. I'm proud that my word means something and a handshake is as good as a contract. Most Northerners that I've met in my life have been lying, conniving, using assholes ... Their word means nothing.
Unfortunately so many northerners have migrated to the South that they're lying ways have been implemented into southern culture the last couple of decades. Also I have nothing against hard-working black people such as myself. I have several black friends that work just as hard as I do and strive to have nice things and live in a good neighborhood with good school systems.
And there is plenty of white trash that take advantage of the system, I even have a couple of nephews that do that.

quote:That was perhaps a bit of artistic embellishment on my part. They were Jewish, and they were growing concerned about strident anti-Semitism in pre-WW1 Germany. As it turned out, they were quite prescient in their fear. Obviously, their fellow countrymen wouldn't be rounded up for the ovens for another couple of decades, but apparently my great, great grandfather believed a general national consensus against the Jews would culminate in persecution. So, he got his young family together and made his way to New Orleans.

When some good 'ole boy talks about 'southern pride' they usually mean they're proud to be uneducated and unaware of the rest of the world.

That is a dumb question. Wtf do you think sec hype is? Southern pride doesn't have to have anything to do with the civil war.
Since you are being an a-hole I will be too and say again that there are lots of people absolutely thrilled that the sc shooting happened for the opportunities it gives them.

I am proud to be a native of Louisiana. I am proud of southern traditions. I'm proud of southern hospitality. I'm proud of SEC football.

Put simply, It's in response to northern elitism and constantly and unfairly being shite on by the rest of the country.
There's only one kind of regional pride that's really famous and that's southern pride. You don't hear about western or northern pride.
