My parents have one. It was surprisingly active as a puppy, but has now settled down into the stereotypical lazy bloodhound on the porch. She does chew on things a lot, though.

What were Bassett hounds usually used for?

I've got a Red Bone/Bassett mix. Best dog I've ever had. Really friendly and sleeps A LOT.

Never used him to hunt so he's 100% pet.

Rabbit hunting in England. They were bred to go under brush. Owned three. Will probably get another. Good family pet and overall companion. Just handle them real gently as pups to cut down on back trouble in later years. Very good with kids. A but michievious, but comical.

I have 2 bassetts. Great dogs. Have to re home one though because he's not getting along with the older one. Good dogs though. Would recommend.

4. He was a rescue that I got from some white trash who kept him in a kennel his entire life (2 at the time) and didn't pet him or bathe him or anything. He's very needy because of it. A sweetheart but should be the only dog in a house where he can get a lot of attention. He loses his shite when we pay attention to the other dog.
