Does anyone here know how to play bagpipes? Is it difficult to learn?

Thinking of tapping into my Scottish roots and picking up a set and learning myself.

Supposedly one of the most difficult instruments to learn to play proficiently, although I've never tried.
ETA: My sister in-law majored in music and can play pretty much every mainstream instrument imaginable... says her life goal is to learn bagpipes.

Well that's not a promising start to my quest

Not at all, initially. Start with a practice chanter. If you have played any instruments previously you will note the difference in how you have to finger note changes vs tongue. See what I did there?
Once you learn your notes and/or the songs you want to play, you can then transfer that knowledge directly to the pipes where you will then learn how to maintain a constant supply of air to the bag and how to push that air. If you are anywhere near Baton Rouge you can hook up with the Caledonian Society.

I tried to get noise (not even a song mind you) out of a set at St. Patrick's Day last year. Piper let me try in exchange for a beer. I got nothing and believe it when he told me it takes "years" to become proficient with the instrument.
I will stick to a kilt and fifth of Jameson's instead.

Wife's cousin is big into this. Plays those fricking things everywhere. Couldn't imagine having to live within a mile of him.

Just play the air bagpipes. You can rock out in your head.

Bagpipe is pretty much the most badass instrument on the planet. That low drone that comes before the music starts is so awesome.

Seriously. The bagpipes has to be the most annoying instrument every made. It's loud and shrill.
Drink McEwans, that's as Scottish as anybody needs to be.

What's the difference between an onion and a bagpipe?
Nobody cries when you cut open a bagpipe.

It seems pretty easy, I had a friend that had a set and I messed around them a bit, you just keep filling up the bag which is held between your arm and side and meter out air to the instrument and play it sort of like a recorder

You don't pay bagpipers to play, you pay them to stop playing.

TAPS And Amazing Grace.. When played on the bagpipes will send chills down me everytime
Thanks, great sound there, lad.

I absolutely love Amazing Grace played on the pipes and would love to have it played at my funeral. However, I am neither military personnel or of Scottish descent.
My question: Would it be offending to these groups if I would have this played at my funeral?

This guy plays the bags and I think taught at one time.
I see he has closed down his shop but has a FB page. Maybe you can 'friend' him and send a message asking if he gives lessons or can name someone local.

The best part about learning the bagpipes is getting to wear those awesome skirts.

I bought a few just in case I ever decided to take up the bagpipes.

Ditto the practice canter.
My 26 year old daughter has always wanted a set...she got them from her boyfriend for Christmas. She practices every day with the canter. It is hard getting down the breathing technique. She is taking lessons from a proficient player who heads up a bagpipe society of some type in Louisville...who plays all over.

if you do this I may come over and take a dump on your dinner table just to show solidarity with your neighbors.
My old next door neighbor was into bagpipes, was a member of the local bagpipe group of assholes, and even taught new bag blowers how to play. For some reason these asshats couldn't practice inside. I asked him onetime to take it inside because I was having a party and he refused. Something about needing to march around to practice correctly.
So for years at my old house, every evening was spent hearing beginner level bag blowers labor through the worst sounding instrument invented by human kind. Do you know how bad it is to hear a beginner blow pipes for years on end?
Dont get me started on the dorks that came to the pipe blower bbq's.
I'm so jaded against the bag that if I see a guy playing them I automatically know hes an a-hole that needs to be punched in the nuts.
If you want to honor your heritage, just put on a kilt, get super drunk, and go toss around telephone poles.
Dont make the rest of the world listen to the bagpipes.
