Supper is night time meal.
My wife's family says dinner for lunch and supper for evenings.
I've always said lunch for midday and dinner for night.

Lunch 12. Dinner 4-5. Supper 6:30 or later

Dinner. My grandparents are the only ones I've ever been around that said supper

It may make me absolutely crazy, but since this isn't the 1950's deep south:
-I call my dad dad, not daddy
-I call my mom mom, not mama
-I say dinner, not supper
-I call a small stream a creek, not a "crick"
-I call a carbonated beverage whatever the frick is printed on the label, and don't use "coke" as some generic catch-all

Interchangeable.
However, my grandparents (and most older people in the south that I know) use the word "dinner" to refer to lunch.

I grew up with "supper" but now we say dinner. But I wouldn't think about it if someone did, and I'm sure my parents still do.
The coke thing is so exaggerated. It's definitely true that I use coke as a generic term for soft drink, so that I might say "let's go get a coke or something" even if I'm getting a Dr. Pepper.
But this "waitress I'll have a coke" "what kind of coke, honey" "oh let me have a fanta" shite never happens, despite the "look how southern I am" facebook posts.

Breakfast, dinner, and supper. It is that easy!

I only know a few people younger than 50 who call it "supper", and I know a lot of country bumpkins.

Is Sunday Dinner after church an evening meal? Or midday?
Posted on 7/23/17 at 6:54 pm to Ingeniero
If someone invites you to dinner, I guess you would need to know what dinner is to them. Could be embarrassing showing up or not showing up at the correct time!

How does no one in this thread realize Michelangelo didn't paint this painting? It's hilarious that his comment got 28 up votes for citing the wrong artist.

it's a southern, generational thing.
for older southerners (particularly those on farms or in agricultural jobs), the mid day meal was the largest of the day to provide enough sustenance to make it through hard labor. so for whatever reason, lunch was referred to as dinner.
growing up in the south, lunch was only called dinner on sundays...sunday dinner. have no clue why
and to add to the dinner/supper conundrum, there are "supper clubs" where groups of people meet to have dinner/supper together but when they go to a restaurant for the night time meal, they "go out out to dinner".

99% of people not in the sticks say dinner but a bunch of people will claim they say supper to stand out

Lunch and dinner for me. Grew up saying supper until I went to college.
From what I can tell people who say supper are older or live in the country. Just from personal experiences.
