My favorite mod is when people put in K&N air filters. All it does is allow more airflow by reducing filtration. Then you frick up your MAF sensor and the engine gets lots of extra particles. All for 3 horsepower at redline lol

Performance tuning or modifying your daily driver doesn't make much sense when top speed limit anywhere in the region is 70mph. Unless your daily driver is a moped.

My first truck I put a cam, lt headers, no cats, dual electric cutouts, 3000 stall torque converter, intake, 4.56 gears + LSD, and a tune. Couldn't get the tune right since I was trying to get it done via email, so it was slow. Sounded good though. Guy I sold it to changed some things, added a 150 shot of nitrous and promptly blew the transmission. 
2nd truck just had a muffler and tuner.
Current truck is stock and will likely stay that way. If I want to modify anything, I'll buy a sports car or something I can toy with.
