Also I would point out that there is a factual difference in camping out in an unused federal building and actively obstructing a project while destroying private property.

i call it "smart". that's what this board would be calling a development company that kept an ace hidden.

They probably shouldn't be shooting at or throwing molotov cocktails at the police, if they were smart.

Yep, just sitting around the campfire singing songs and eating s'mores

They also bulldozed a road using commandeered equipment, used a backhoe to dig a trench to shite in, and prevented access by maintenance workers and tourists who ordinarily visit the Refuge for the winter bird count. But it's okay, because they're patriots, right?

$6 million worth of damage

Indian Lands, Indian Subsidies, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs

quote:

about 50 different subsidy programs, including programs for education, economic development, tribal courts, road maintenance, agriculture, and social services. The BIE provides primary and secondary education to 41,000 students in 183 schools.

The Department of Health and Human Services houses the Indian Health Service, which has a budget of about $4 billion. The Department of Housing and Urban Development runs the Native American Housing Block Grant Program, which has a budget of about $800 million. And the Department of Education spends more than $300 million a year on BIE schools.

the government continues to oversee 55 million acres of land held in trust for Indians and tribes.

The 2010 Census found that there are 2.9 million American Indians and Alaskan Natives in the United States. Of this total, about 954,000, or 33 percent, live on Indian reservations and in Alaskan native villages.

It seems that people who get free stuff want more free stuff.

It sounds like reparations. Have you ever heard that word before?

Again this is a largely unused federal facility as opposed to reportedly killing nearby landowner's livestock and actively attacking police.

I have basically no sympathy for the Oregon Yahoos. The actual landowners involved were at least treated like shite, but the Bundys and the other hangers-on up there are a bunch of fricknuts.

With that said, their situation is simply than destroying private property.

One comparison is that like the Oregon thing, the Standing Rock protests have become overrun with outsiders.

Yeah the Bundy's and their sycophants showed up in Oregon to push their own agenda. So what agenda are the outsiders in N.D. pushing? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Buffet owns 15% of Phillips 66, which has a 25% stake in this pipeline. So he actually loses as this project gets delayed.

The project has a team of archeologists on board to ensure that no historical sites or artifacts are disturbed by construction. The timing and lack of participation early in this process by the tribe give credence to the argument that this is purely a money grab.

Also, there's an existing pipeline and other utilities that run through this path already.

Well if it's true the Indians were only offered 10 mil on a pipeline that will bring in hundreds of millions/billions then the Indians should be asking for more.

Except it turns out they don't have that much leverage. If it costs me $15 million to re-route around you then $10 million is a fair offer.

The tribe got too greedy, the pipeline company decided it would be cheaper to route around them. That is the free market for you.

FWIW $10 million is probably a lot more than most landowners facing eminent domain received.

Lastly the notion that they are owed more than that based on the total potential profit of the line is ridiculous. This project will take years to go cash flow positive and involves a huge capital expenditure by the companies involved. Simply being a jackass who owns some land on the route doesn't entitle to hundreds of millions in profit, especially when you own a tiny fraction of the length of the line.
