Have some friends looking for a house in Baton Rouge and they are adamant that their home has a "den".

As a kid we had a room that we called a den, but it was pretty much never used for anything.

Anybody here use their den in the regular? If so, is it still a den?

My grandparents called the living room the Den.

Nope, it's pretty outdated and usually eliminated in modern 'open' plans.

A living room and a den are the same thing.

The den is where you hang out. The living room is where you never go.

Yes. The den is our most coziest part of the house. The living room doesn't have a television. It has a few chairs, couch, coffee table, piano, etc. It's more of a formal setting. The den has the TV, couches, love seat, etc. It's where we watch games, movies, etc. Outside of family gatherings, the living room (and dining room as well) is essentially useless.

My aunt and uncle have one, but it's pretty much the family room. They have a formal living room, that only gets used when my kids and my little cousins use the area to sleep.

we have a room with a wood burning stove and big windows with a built-in bookshelf we use to hang out & play games in (no tv).

our den is a sunken room with a fireplace & tv (with a 1970s side bar room) so most of our time is spent here.

sunken dens rock.

Everyday.

To me the difference between a den and a living room is that a den has a fireplace.

We rarely use our front formal living room other than to mix drinks at the bar, but we watch tv and build fires in the den towards the back of the house regularly.

Growing up we had about 4 living rooms that were for formal occasions and important visitors. My mother wouldn't let us go to that part of the house, really.

We had a large den. It was where we could watch TV and whatnot.

I have a big open room with a TV and a fireplace that I call the living room. We have an equally big room for the kids with a TV and kid stuff that I call the kids living room. We haven't had a den since we kicked the bears out.

He's right.

The den is the main congregating area with the tv and couches and where people hang out.

The living room is the crusty old place with antique shite you just have to put somewhere.

I have a den and I love it. It's become an INformal area. Used to use it as extra entertaining space with a day bed but now it's a awesome room for all the kids to keep their toys and such in. I like keeping the clutter from toys and play mats contained in the den and out of the living room.

My parents have a den and it is the biggest room in the house. It is separate from the living room and the room we were allowed to use growing up. The den is probably the most used room in their house. I think it is around 1,000 sq feet or bigger.

Yes.

It is never used right now, but I think it will get used in the future when our kid(s) get older. They can watch TV in the back media room and me and the wife can hang out in the den.

I've always called them the exact opposite...
