EXACTLY!

Think of it this way. If you're in the "normal" range, you're good. If you're just slightly in the overweight range but you CURRENTLY work out regularly and you know you're in good shape, you're good and I don't have to tell you this.

BUT

If you're in the "obese" range and you're not a competitive body builder or strongman of some type, spin it any way you want, but you carry too much fat and you should lose weight.

It's not perfect but if you follow those guidelines I think it's accurate enough.

eta: And I'm talking about general health here, not "looking good at the beach" or anything like that.

it's still a solid tool and a good guideline

So 5'10" and 120 is a good ratio but 175 is overweight?

That's stupid.

Plenty of people who are in the normal range are in terrible shape and have high levels of bodyfat.

Neither is ideal. But neither is that bad, given certain circumstances. ie. skinny 17 year old kid who's a late bloomer could be 5'10 120 and totally healthy. An adult who lifts regularly could be 5'10
175 and totally healthy.

FWIW, The military uses a modified BMI formula that includes additional measurements.

I haven't read the thread, but no, being obese is not a disability.

It seems to be becoming a sense of entitlement for some, imo. Your situation last night is a good example.

caused by something like a thyroid issue.

This is a very common misconception. Just because someone has a low thyroid does not mean they will be fat. With proper medication, dieting, and exercise there is no reason for them to be fat. Will they have to work harder and be more disciplined, yes. If they are unwilling to do these three things then yes they will be very fat.

I think in some people it can be a mental disability. Some people have serious issues with food.

Have you ever seen the show "My 600 pound life" on TLC (I think). The amount of food that they eat a day is ridiculous, combined with no exercise. I just don't feel pity for those people.

But for the purposes of BMI, it doesn't matter. It's not about looks.

they aren't fat

They have a distended abdomen caused by malnutrition, not adipose caused by excess calorie intake

Can you imagine what it's like to never feel "full"?

Some people with obesity do not have this capability

I can't say with confidence that I wouldn't be severely over weight as well if I never felt "full".

Don't judge.
