Sign up, go get shot at, and watch a few of your friends die.
Then get back to us a-hole.
Then get back to us a-hole.

There's probably some truth in that. Maybe it's due to some feeling of guilt about not having served oneself. At one time everybody had a military obligation to fulfill. Now we leave it to others and go on our merry way.

Man, you use to be one of my favorite posters.. but wow you say some dumb stuff.
It's not "idolizing" whatsoever
It's giving thanks.. and no, we can never give enough thanks for those that risk their lives for our freedom.
No, we can't recognize them enough.
Many people in general are complete assholes, but at least these "assholes" are willing to lay down their life for you and yours..
And no, I don't feel like they find it overkill. Many appreciate the outpouring of support. They deserve as much positive support as possible man. Especially during war and all the hell they go through. Always deserve to have attention of them and appreciation.
Goodness Hugo, this is pathetic.

I work in one of the few jobs that can result in sudden, instant death too. We don't idolize them enough.

Yup. I really am disappointed in OP.
They deserve as much recognition and appreciation and support as possible.
In today's time, people see something enough and everyone is quick to just be sick of something.. Tired of seeing even the most positive of things.. It's just the way it these days.. Try to think outside of your dislikes or non appreciation.. Understand life is precious and have more compassion for others.

I tip my hat to those who were drafted or fought in the earlier Wars. They are of a different breed and deserve all the benefits and gratitude they get.
I appreciate those who chose the military for a career in the last 35 years. I also appreciate policeman and fireman just as much. Most chose that career path b/c of the benefits and lack of better opportunities, not for national pride or feeling to give me freedom.
We do idolize them too much. No one is forced to join the military anymore. It was your career choice. Good for you. More people die doing the dangerous jobs in our country in manufacturing, refining and chemical plants than military deaths, which are mostly friendly fire or lack of safety/accidents.
I'm as happy we have servicemen today, as much as we have garbageman. I don't want to do either job, but I'm glad someone does. Difference is, if no one wants to pick up garbage, we don't pick up garbage. If no one wants to join the military, the military will just make certain people join.
Until they start making people join, it's just another career choice to me, no different than any other career choice.

I see your point but when I got home from Afghanistan I was on recruiting duty and was spit on and ridiculed in my dress blues. So there are many that agree with you way of thinking. To all of that line of thinking frick YOU.

As anecdotal evidence, I give you Christmas. A holiday that should appeal to all regardless of ethnicity or religious beliefs, and yet people will deride it.
Hope the OP is trolling. If not, shame on him.

Seems to me like there's a lot of people in here who have lost a girlfriend to a Marine in his blues.

Seeing a military recruiter is about equal to a Jehovah's Witness. No one wants to have that awkward conversation with you when we're not in the least bit interested in joining the forces.

This sounds like something that I would read in a George Orwell novel.
