It's not leaking anywhere inside, but the water pressure is low er than usual, although not terribly low so it has to be a pipe outside.

I went and looked at what I thought was our meter and it was spinning like a top. But they have several meters side by side so I'm not 100% sure that was our meters. I checked the others and none were spinning.

I seem to recall hearing that if you have a leak you get a one time forgiveness pass for the increase in water usage.

Anyone have experience with this.

And before anyone says we are fricked, we are renting while we decode whether to build or buy, so the owner will have to pay to have the shite fixed. I just don't want a high arse water bill.

Does not compute.

Eta- turn off your main supply valve. If the meter stops spinning you have your answer.

You have an outside leak. They will give you 1 "break" but typically they require a copy of the invoice that you get from the plumbing company.

Could be a pipe busted from the meter to the house. Although it's under asphalt so really impossible to tell.

I thought they had a special wrench for that shite.

I'm not reporting it til Monday AM because I dont want to go all weekend without water.

Depends on if the leak is on your property or the town/city's property. I'd turn off the water now, notify them, and ask if they can send someone out. If it's not soon, turn water on/off whenever you need it knowing that there's a leak. Your bill is going to be a little higher if you do it this way but not absurdly high as if you kept it running 24/7 with a leak. Good luck

Good point, though that may lead to settlement issues in your driveway (where I am assuming it is).

That's what I thought. I seem to recall someone who worked at the local utiliy mentioning that once.

There should be a control valve right before the cold water supply enters your house. That's different from the control valve on the street.

Depends on where you are, some aren't allowed to give you a break by law

Not sure how it works everywhere, but this happened to me once and they waived all of my "sewer" charges over my trailing 6-month average but I still had to pay for the water.

Seemed pretty fair to me and I didn't really expect to get any favors.

If you have a busted water pipe, you'll know about it.

Typically the meter is the point of transition from public utility to private utility.

u can turn this valve off with a crescent wrench and turn 90 degrees. rectangular bar parallel to pipe = on, perpendicular to line off.

I have a buddy who has one of those T handle wrenches and another friend who's a plumber coming over to have a look.

My memory isn't the best, but I seem to recall a guy who worked at our utiliy mentioning the forgiveness policy. But who knows. I will take the increase out of the rent before I pay it.

Short answer, NO. Cut the water off at the house. If its still spinning, you've narrowed it down between the meter and your line in. If you have the tool, or know someone that does you can cut it off at the meter. The meter number, last month usage, or some form of ID should be on your previous bill.

I would call and report it asap. If it's NOLA they should get to you in 2-3 weeks. Best of luck.

Well, that's what I thought. I noticed just a ever so slight dip in water pressure and didn't think much about it but then went outside and the meter needle was spinning so fast I got dizzy. I know for a fact it isn't inside or at any of the spigots (I have them insulated) but wondering if its not under the asphalt. Something had that needle spinning and I had everything in the house that uses water turned off. Including the ice maker.
