Do you want to live in one? That’s a different scenario.

The question is how much is your leisure time camping worth to you? You can’t really look at depreciating toys like an investment

As actual financial ROI? Probably not. I don’t own one but a lot of that is comfort and time and that goes a long way.

Hotels are MUCH cheaper and easier to use.

I guess I'm moreso thinking of people who have crazy shite like this. Do they buy these with the thought that they'll save on hotels or something? Seems pennywise and pound foolish.

Pay for themselves vs. lodging on the road? Only if you are in a hotel, out of your own pocket a shite ton - like 200 nights a year over 5 years with $175 hotel rooms - then maybe.

For example, travel nurses. Now a lot of people sell their sticks and bricks home and RV full time then it works out.

I use it for access and comfort. I like having my creature comforts with me and not being in a hotel room. I have never once looked at it as a money saver.

The upside of camping in an RV is you are always sleeping in your own bed, can cook your own meals and enjoy seeing the country. Most of the people you meet in campgrounds are the friendliest people around. If you are buying an RV to save money, you are doing it wrong. And most hotels are nasty as hell.

I’ve yet to meet anyone who got their moneys worth out of it. They are fine for a few years then become maintenance problems. My brother had one… he was going to drag it on all their travel ball trips. Never did.

I’m sure some people get a lot of use out of them but most don’t.

Since when is buying an RV supposed to return an investment?

RVing is a hobby, and like most hobbies you do them for the family time, or the enjoyment you get out of it. That shite cost money.

If you chase turnarounds in one, I’d say yes.

Who cares? It’s the millenials and their social security paying for it

Seems like it'd be mostly weirdos and people on the "registry."

My grandparents probably got close on one. They bought it used and lived in New Mexico with it about 6 months/year. Did that for 10 years plus other various excursions. Don’t think they came out ahead but at least it wasn’t a complete money pit. And, they enjoyed spending time with fellow snow birds.

OTOH, they eventually moved to NM, bought land, a house, and bought/sold two brand new RVs, plus accompanying full size pickups each time. Then moved back to LA. Dropped over $500K in 2 years, and that was in 1990 dollars.

My parents had a 5th wheel and used it twice a year to go to the mountains, stay a month+ in the spring and Fall.

They had it for many years. Only bad thing was the need to empty the dirty water, but my dad was crazy enough to wait till after dark and dump it. He really got caught a few times because the ranger would come by in the morning and ask why is wet around this 5th wheel. Nothing happened to him though

There’s a difference in trailer park type places and good campgrounds.

Good campgrounds are the places where people have the same lot for decades, build nice decks on their campers, and have Fourth of July parades with golf carts.

Those are typically very friendly people.
