If I had to do it over again I would learn a trade. While the degree is necessary for certain jobs people strive for with the push of go to college or fail at life, many degrees are useless and never get the investment back. Somewhere having a trade got looked down on and everyone was too good for it. With so many people struggling to find jobs post college and debt you are doing yourself or children a disservice by not showing them that option and only promoting massive debt to start life

I hear ya. Posted this not long ago about the topic

quote:

It also hurts that many skills and professions are looked down upon nowadays. Learning a trade is looked at as being low class. Electricians, plumbers, welders, etc.

No one grows up saying yea I want to be an electrician or a welder. People qualified for these jobs are few and far between but we need them as much as ever. I know a few people with these jobs and they all make good money and can work 24/7 if they wanted to.

shite we had a thread not long ago about the demand for welders. Master welders are basically naming their price in parts of the country.

But hey let's encourage( force) everyone to go to college to get that piece of paper lol.

Why not use tens of thousands of free dollars? Trade school is a lot cheaper and that degree could be obtained supplementary for not much money. Meanwhile you get a cheap 4-year degree from a solid university.

The problem is that you are putting a ceiling on your kid's life by encouraging trade school.

Not everyone with a college degree becomes a CEO, but you'd find it very difficult to become a CEO without one (sure, there are prominent exceptions, but these people are exceptional).

I wouldn't encourage trade school. I would show both options instead of pushing that there is only one option . Then let them decide what they want to do from there.

This is a classic case of claiming CNN.com articles as reality. There are tons of people who do not think like this. You just avoid reality to prove a point. Try to not appeal to a false authority.

Free/cheap or not there are still tons of useless degrees. It's to a point that most degrees are useless unless it's in a specialized field like nursing, engineer, etc.

Meanwhile the people in those trade schools are usually entering the job market 2-3 years before college grads and for more money starting out

No idea. And anyone who did, did so of their own volition. You can't blame the system for failures of lazy individuals.

Job training is not the sole purpose of a college education.

Sure, but do you want to tell your kid he or she can't be one? Its a powerful idea, which drives most parents to encourage college.

Well, at least they're easy to spot and avoid. I have to drive by a plant on the way to the farm. When I exit, I can almost guarantee whether or not the person I fell in line behind is going to turn into the plant. I bet I have a 90% success rate on my predictions.
