bunny huggers will argue, but shock collars work on all dogs

This. I use the vibration setting on my dog's collar for correction. Only on occasion will I need to "zap" her to gain her attention immediately where I sense where she could hurt herself (car) or others.

Shock collars (with an operator who knows what they're doing) are the most effective doc training devices ever invented.

I can kick my dog in the arse from over 1000 yards away with mine, and see where he is and what he's doing from just as far. That's incredibly powerful.

Now I just hit the tone button and he quits whatever he's doing and comes back to me on a dead sprint and sits next to me unless I tell him otherwise. From a half mile away. That's amazing.

This. My golden wears a shock coller and at this point I rarely if ever actually use the shock. I find that the vibration serves the same purpose. Some people may have reservations about shock collers but they work. I can walk my dog through the neighborhood, in the park and around other animals with no leash at all. Not to mention he has all the other basic commands down. He was a handful when I got him but after the a few months on the coller he is now the best trained dog I've ever had.

I purposely set my dog in "place" around other barking dogs while walking. I want as many distractions as possible.

She watches them, but I can quickly grab her attention with "focus." When I want her to release her place, I use the command "break" and she runs to me. She then gets rewarded with affection. Rinse and repeat.

Lab plus puppy equals one solution: get it tired.

Most problems with a lab will go away if you can find a way to get it tired. Run it, walk it, fetch, anything.
