Got whipped by both parents not all at one time. Can't tell you one time now looking back that I didn't deserve it. I have 3 kids now and I do spank but I can count on one hand the times I have spanked all 3. They are all teens fwiw.

My father used to just put a belt, a stick, and a wrench on the table. Just say, "choose."

Spanked quite regular with a belt and deserved everyone. Scared shitless of my dad right before each one.
As an adult I've always tried to follow two rules.
Spanked if disrespectful, a loss of some sort (TV priveleges, phone, toy etc) for everything else based on how bad it was.
I've also only spanked mine a handful of times.

I was spanked with an open hand a couple times as a child and each time I deserved it.
No, but I made sure as hell NOT to do again what I got the spanking for.

Yes, and I earned everyone of them. Timeouts have their place. I think they are best used to interrupt when a child is doing something that requires time. Such as not sharing a toy because they feel they want more time with it, or if they are at a pool and misbehaving. Because a spanking allows them to continue the activity immediately. Whereas taking the time away is more of a punishment. If that doesn't work, spanking and timeout.

I will also say that I never got hit anywhere other than my butt. Until I was 17 and back talked my mom really bad and my dad slapped me on the mouth. I earned that one though.

Got hit with the hand on the ol' caboose here and there but usually had to hold up my arms straight to the sky anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes with or without objects in hand. Bend 'em and the time started over
