"Hey, drop a grand to come to Punta Cana for my wedding."

Background:
-Fiancee is in said wedding as bridesmaid, she has to go
-Fiancee and I are also tying the knot this year and we're already spending thousands on that
-Other summer travel plans are already solidified (trip to see parents, conference, bachelor party)
-[Probably] Moving to Europe several months after my own wedding (relocation costs)

People, don't do this to your friends. They will hate you for it.

Just stay home and let somebody else bang your old lady that night.

Honestly, no, she doesn't. She might want to go, but she doesn't have to go. Especially if it's going to put you and her in a financial bind.

I think you just got the unlucky straw being as your fiancee is in the wedding. Just enjoy the trip, bro. #yolo

I think destination weddings are ok if:

1) it is a relatively local destination (nice mountain town, for example); or
2) the people are older (30+) and it's going to be very small

Your fiancee didn't have to be a bridesmaid.

Weddings are supposed to be selfish. They're about the couple getting married.

Sorry you're poor

Had a family member get married in Destin while I was at LSU. Had to miss the LSU/Auburn game and then the wedding was the Sunday the saints went on that massive comeback against the dolphins in 09. Everyone missed the first half of the reception to watch the end of the saints game.

TL;DR : OP is right, and if you do def dont do it in football season.

I like your thinking. I'm not sure she will.

I think it's OK to have them, but the couple has to understand that a lot of people may not go and need to keep it to close family and friends. Two of my cousins got married in Mexico and most of us just said "have fun."

Well they aren't selfish if no one is invited or you pay for most of everyone's trip.

Or make it very optional for everyone besides bride and groom and understood no feelings hurt if people can't make it.

I probably will say no. And this board is largely for complaints. Thanks.

I don't think of Destin as a destination wedding. The problem here was that it was a fall wedding, which is fricking inexcusable in the south.

It's not selfish. It's their big day, not yours. If you can't afford it don't go, they'll understand. That was part of the risks of planning a wedding like that.
