I hadn't been to Destin for twenty years until a few years ago. The beaches are sugary white and clean, the water is beautiful, and it is a great place to relax. Perfect and just a few hours drive from New Orleans. If I want nightlife and beach I'll go to South Beach, but for relaxation and enjoyment, it is hard to beat IMO.

When at The Breakers or Boca Raton Resort and Club I can get a reserved spot on the beach right up front. There is always a waiter willing to bring food or drink to me. Also, I can get to my room by a short walk.

In Destin, I am lucky to get 20 rows from the water. Plus, to get back to the room or condo, I have to take a bus.

To each their own.

I was not that impressed with the beach in Miami. Sand def not as nice as Destin. And....you see lots of trash wash up on the beaches there. I saw used condoms and other trash right by the water.

Course....obviously Miami has nightlife and more culture there.

Guess it just depends on what you are looking for. I would never go to Destin during the peak season. October was great cause beaches were not packed at all, weather still warm but not too hot, kids in school, and you could rent a condo for much cheaper than in the summer.

There are better and less crowded beaches on the Gulf side. Destin is too touristy anymore.

If you know when to go and where to stay then you won't find it like this - at all.

I agree with the OP. We have found a spot that suits us perfectly for 4-5 day beach trips. Not being near any high-rises the beach is never crowded. Traffic is never a problem because we prepare and cook our own lavish meals. It has become the most relaxing and enjoyable vacation we do a few times a year.
The water is amazingly clean and clear and the beach is clean and the sand is as white as it can be. It can't get any better if you're going to the beach to go to the beach as opposed to going out at night and shopping or water park all day. I go to the beach to spend relaxing time on the beach.

I was impressed by Destin but am open to trying something new. What about Okalusa Island?

Miami is the one major city in the US that I have never been to. Are the people as hot as everyone says?

The only time I've had an experience like this is when I stayed in a high-rise. That's why I don't do that anymore. It's very inconvenient. But if you have the need to impress your friends with the nice Condo you stayed in then that is what you'll get.

Who cares?

People planning a vacation care.
One is on an island with several bars, restaurants, shops, and marinas centrally located. The other is across 2 bridges and 20-30 minutes away.

I like the fishing in Destin for an occasional deep sea outing.

A good beer bar in Destin is the best beer bar in Florida.

Great place for kids, sure... but Disney World is better.

Pros/cons...

If you think Destin is that nice you should trek a little bit further East to the beaches and communities of 30A. Santa Rosa, Grayton, Watercolor, etc. That is AWESOME!

I wouldn't be caught dead in Destin during the summer. Too many people on the beach. Too much traffic. Too many people trying to eat in the restaurants. 30 years ago Destin was a small place. Now its just another tourist trap with i have to admit great beaches. We prefer a beach house in Fort Morgan, away from all the high rises, the traffic, the noise, the people on the beaches, etc. and the water is crystal clear there too.

I do however, play golf in mid march after most snowbirds have flown the summer coop, kids are still in school and not to hot or too cold. Now that's when Destin is nice...or a few weeks after labor day weekend

Was there for the first time around halloween and damn is it nice. The beach was amazing as was the area in general. I enjoyed it a lot more than Destin.
