A central Florida sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man after police say the man pointed a stapler at the deputy during a standoff.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, when police responded to a call Monday night about suspected drug activity at an Auburndale home, they found Dominic Fuller, 34, sitting in a stolen car. Fuller, who had been arrested 17 times on 32 charges, then ran when deputies approached, police said.

While on the run, police say Fuller kept trying to open the doors to vehicles and houses during his escape attempt, including a parked camper, where he woke up a woman and demanded a ride, which was denied. One witness reported hearing Fuller yell, "I have a gun," according to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

Deputies finally found Fuller in the doorway of a house, police said. When police demanded he surrender, Fuller showed only his left hand, keeping his right hand behind his back.

At this point, Judd said, Fuller went back inside, then came back, raised his right hand and appeared to be pointing a black and chrome object at the deputy. According to the sheriff's release, Deputy Gabriel Reveron said he feared for his life and fired five shots at Fuller.

The Tampa Tribune reports Fuller went back in the home and slammed the door, leading to a two-hour period with a SWAT team and crisis team trying to contact Fuller. When the SWAT team entered the home, which was empty at the time except for Fuller, officers found the man dead with a black and silver stapler near his body.
