Multiple folks talking to theirselves in here tonight.

And actually I gotta say, having lived thru medical school, that the medical school part itself is actually a fundamentally essential part of the patient care/decision making, it's not just the residency training. there is a reason for everything taught in medical education - it's for the safety and best possible outcome for the patient.

You must not remember the Great Optometrist/Opthalmologist War on the OT during a prior legislative session. The jimmies were so rustled.

It's 1:15 on a Friday night. Any argument you get will likely be done simply to grind your gears

I'm agreeing with you for the most part but now you're just sounding desperate and more worried about your territory and job security than actual pt's well being.

Sorry doc, I'd rather pay a NP $30 to write me a antibiotic prescription for my strep-throat than pay you a $100.
May have to sell that summer home in Mankato bay.
Will send prayers.
A NP cost $30 dollars now because they work under supervision.
You don't think once they are granted individual practice rights they won't raise their prices for the "same" work?

I'm a specialist. There's no NPs in my field or if any, it's exceedingly rare so that slant on it is nonsense
Posted on 4/9/16 at 1:39 am to LATigerdoc
Again, I agree that they should not be able to practice independently, but Revolts happens when one is paid 30% for >90% of the same work/ effort in a primary care/ urgent care setting.

I think they get like 70-80% at least. Correct me if I'm wrong. And it's not the same work. The education/training is dissimilar and so the knowledge/expertise is also dissimilar between the np and MD
Posted on 4/9/16 at 1:48 am to LATigerdoc
80-85% is what the np gets compared to the MD and their school is not close to 80% of the MD's. And the optometrist gets 100% of the eye exam fee, I believe, as compared to the eye doctor.

Thanks for your input doctor.

Lol!!!!
No. No he's not.

How does this bill work as it relates to liability for medical malpractice?
Posted on 4/9/16 at 3:33 am to LATigerdoc
I have cleaned up a few NP messes and missed diagnoses as a resident and fellow. I have seen someone repeatedly defibrillating a patient for sinus tach, missed septic shock, and outpatient diagnosis that were missed for years culminating in preventable morbidity. That being said, nurses and NPs have been invaluable to my education and are a critical part of patient care and NPs as physician extenders even more so.
If autonomy is granted then training MUST be extended for licensure. There is no substitute for experience and the consequences of ignorance can be catastrophic. Patients deserve nothing less.
My $0.02 is that if they want the autonomy then be prepared for the liability.

Rule # 1 of persuasion:
Don't post on the OT.
Here's a graphic representation of the odds that you'll change someone's mind.

Louisiana nurse practitioners are pushing to remove oversight by MDs in the primary care of patients. Eliminating the collaborative practice agreement is NOT safe for Louisiana patients. Nursing school is simply NOT equivalent education to medical school. Nurse practitioner school is NOT equivalent to medical residency training. Louisiana patients deserve to have the primary care of a Medical Doctor. The education/training pathways are simply not equivalent, and there is no way to accurately argue otherwise.

You practice law in a state with Independent NP practices?

You failed to convince one person on here that you're right. Well done.
