In Canada and Europe they bring the card scanner to the table and let you insert your card so that you keep control of it. Looks like a small personal card reader with a printer.

In another 5 years, they probably won't take it at all.
In canada, the server brings a portable cc machine to your table for you to pay your own tab.
It is becoming more common in the PNW too. I imagine it will catch on and in a few more years, servers will carry a portable machine and not physically take your card anymore.

Drago's Restaurant...a few years ago they had a server who got busted stealing customers' CC info. Since then, their servers have handheld point of sale devices that they bring to the table to swipe the cards.
