Thanks. But I'm paying cash for this car. Not taking a car payment out for a 16 year old.

I told her when she was 12 that I would match what she saved and she did well. I'm more than willing to throw in a little more for a good, safe used car, but I think you can find one of these Japanese sedans in the 12-14k range that will get her through college.

FWIW your daughter sounds very responsible so she'd likely take extra care of something she has invested her money in. I'd shop more and consider buying new.

FWIW you can buy a brand new 2014 Camry with 0 mile for $15k.

WTF? This can't be right. You can't get almost any new Toyota for that much.

and certainly don't want to buy new

Why not? You can get a new car with a warranty and for $1500 over your budget you can pay for a base Ford Focus or a midrange Ford Fiesta in cash. For less than $15K you can get a base Fiesta.

You can. Scope out some of the actual dealerships. There is always wiggle room. The car may be stickered at 17k but they'll come down on it. You could get it for 14k.

Can I pay you to negotiate for me. I'm the kind of guy dealerships love. I'd negotiate it up to $18k because I don't know shite about cars.

Get something low maintenance. A BMW is not low maintenance.

It's legit because I bought 2 new cars just recently. Thing I love about that website is there is no need to haggle and it's very straight forward. 10 years ago I used to haggle 5~6 hours at the dealership.

there are a lot of resources to help guys like you. Just knowing the actual value of what you are buying is important. Also use truecar.com, the best car buying resource i've seen. LINK

As a use for reference i looked up camrys in my area. Found several newer than an 07 for less than 16k on there. A few as low as 12k

I've seen Mazdas get recommended on here several times. Thought they were POSes?

It's not. That's 36% below MSRP. A lot of those websites are just used to get you in the door. Then they say well we don't have the one you want, but here's what we got and we'll frick you on interest rate and trade in.

It is a great idea and I had sort of the same deal with my parents. The difference is I bought a cheap new car instead of a car with 100K on the clock. This car lasted me 13 years and allowed me to save for something else once I got out of college and started working.

I didn't have to worry about getting a new car and was able to save for a 20% down payment on a house. Just a suggestion to the OP. Think about what situation this car may put your daughter in when she graduates college. I'm glad I didn't have to focus on replacing my car.

It worked out very well and helped her not be wasteful. She would get money for good grades, birthdays and Christmas and stuff and immediately save it. Every once in a while she would buy some shirt or something over and beyond what we bought for her, but she didn't spend her money on $250 jeans like her friends did.

If anything goes wrong with The BMW will cost $700 minimum for the dealership to open the hood.

Put the $12k down and let her finance another $8k or so. Monthly note will be low, she can build some credit, and she won't have a "new" car with 100k miles on it.
