is what the A/C is pushing on us to get. The old man has been servicing the unit in this house as well as another relatives for at least 15 years so I trust him.

Is Lennox worth it? He is quoting three units ranging from $3888 to $4500. Guess I wasn't expecting it to be this much.
He can't do Train or Carrier, but said he can quote another brand if we want him to look into it.

If it's a 15 year old unit, he has to replace everything: Outside unit and upstairs air handler, because your unit has to be an R-12 unit and those have been replaced by 410a units.

That is a fair price my friend.

Lennox is decent and I don't think those prices are that outrageous or anything.

Rip-off artists River City/One-Hour Air tried to quote my $7500 and I laughed in their fricking face.

My Lennox has been going for 20 years. I'm hoping for several more.

Sorry I forgot to mention that the upstairs unit was replaced or whatever by the previous owners. I think he will still need to add a meter or something.

It's only a 4 ton unit and my house is less than 1900sf, so I was just kind of surprised at the price.

River City gave me the same bullshite $7500 no name quote for our bedrooms unit last week. Got a Trane from central heating and air for $5700. Everything replaced from plenum back, gas furnace, 2.5 ton

Train or carrier will cost roughly the same as Lennox. All three make great products.

Several manufacturers make "dry" condensing units, charged with nitrogen instead of refrigerant. This enables you to avoid changing to 410A if you're not changing the entire system. Just dump the nitrogen, pull a vacuum, and charge it. No changing of the TXV or flushing associated with a 410 conversion is required.

Also some "knock off brands" roll off of the same assembly line as Carrier, Goodman, ect. Thermal Zone is one of these.

If that's the price for full system that is more than fair. If just the condenser, I wouldn't say it's a complete rip-off. However, if monetarily possible, it is best to get a full system to take advantage of all warranties that are offered.

Lennox is known as being a top tier system. I'd put Lennox and Carrier up at the top followed very closely by Trane. This is coming from an AC salesman who sells none of these brands (I compete against them), so take that for what it's worth.

ETA: I do deal with Rheem units and they are of very high quality. Very few problems and super easy to work on.

Entire outside unit...compressor and condenser. I feel it was a good deal.
