I have to drive to Dallas for a conference at the end of the month. I will be staying at the Omni Dallas Hotel at Park West. I plan on driving back to Houston after the conference is over around 4pm on Friday. I have only passed through Dallas once while moving so im not sure what traffic is like during the work week.

Will it be gridlock at that time of day trying to get back to Houston and do you have any suggested routes to make travel quicker?

Definitely will be gridlock close to downtown. Once you get to 45 it should be as bad though.

Traffic is the absolute worst on a Friday afternoon. It does not clear up until about 6:30.

LINK
Click 'change' next to 'Live traffic' on the bottom left of the map and you can see what the typical traffic is for any day or time during the week.

Ditto it sucks that time of day during the week but Fridays seem especially bad. But you will be downtown so you will have won half the battle which is reaching downtown.

Stemmons (I-35) to and through downtown will be gridlock-once you get south of downtown on I-45 you'll be good. Just watch your speed going through the podunk towns south of Dallas (Wilmer, Palmer, Ennis etc)-they're all speed trap towns.

35 is usually a parking lot heading south to downtown on a Friday afternoon...

I lived in Dallas for 8 years and just recently moved back. I can tell you that you are in for some rage inducing gridlock at 4pm on a Friday until you get on 45 south of Dallas so get ready. If I were you I would go South on 35E and take Loop 12 down to I20 then Take 20 East over to 45. Its further distance wise but you don't want to be anywhere the downtown mix master at 5 on a Friday.

Thanks. looks like I might try that. Sometimes the longer way is the fastest way.

Omni Park West is on LBJ Freeway which has a lot of construction right now. Unfortunaetly no matter what path you take Southbound there will be congestion along the way. If you can get out of there at 4 though, it won't be as bad as leaving at 4:30-6:00.

Just take the George Bush tollway south and get on 30 into Dallas to get on 45. Farmers Branch is the suburbs; I am not far from there in las colinas

Why would you get on 30 and go through the hell of downtown at rush hour and not keep going south to 20 then over to 45?

Because I did not realize 20 connects up to 45 (I rarely take 20). That would work better.
