Police shooting leaves 15-year-old dead

quote:

Balch Springs -
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office has taken over investigation of a police shooting that left a 15-year-old teenager in Balch Springs dead.

Family and friends identified the teen as Jordan Edwards. Police said they responded to a call of underage kids drinking at around 11 p.m. Saturday night on Baron Drive. When officers got there, police said they heard gunfire and said a car was aggressively backing down the street towards officers. Police said one officer opened fired.

Witnesses said the car drove off and other occupants later noticed Edwards was not speaking. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A representative for the family told FOX 4 News that a group of five young people were at a party when they heard gunshots and tried to leave in their car.

Police said one officer has been placed on administrative leave. The Balch Springs police chief addressed the incident during a Sunday afternoon press conference.

“We express our deep and sincere condolences to the family,” Chief Jonathan Haber said. “I have reached out and personally met and spoken with the parents and expressed my condolences.”

The shooting drew sharp concern from some in the community. The chief ended the news conference without addressing their questions.

Robbin McDonald has known Edwards' family for years. She said her son played sports with Edwards, who was a freshman at Mesquite High School.

“He was a straight A student, I can tell you he was always smiling,” McDonald said. “I can tell you he was a very, very brilliant and humble and very sweet kid.”

Sounds like an honest and terrible mistake that should cost the officer his badge.

Tragic that a kid dies.

Would like to hear the report on everything and possibly see cam footage. Sounds like they were just trying to get away from a bad situation at a party...guess we will see.

Sounds terrible, but who why would you drive fast toward police? Still likely a better no shoot for the police, but I can also see why they may fear for their lives there.

The police will give one version of this incident. That version will put supporting the narrative they want believed above the truth.

The family of this kid will give another version of this incident. That version will put supporting the narrative they want believed above the truth

Meanwhile, the public (including the OT) will argue back and forth about it. One one side will be those who ignore the facts of the case and blindly support the cops. On the other side will be those who ignore the facts of the case and blindly support the teen.

When all is said and done nothing will change except this 15 year old kid will be in a box under 6' of dirt.

Gateway drugs. Starts with sugar -> caffeine-> alcohol.

Hope for both sides sake the LEO had on a body cam to show if they were backing into him or just driving off.

It mentions nothing about race. So most likely white on white, not enough for national media.

Man, just another story to stir up the topic rift before AS announcement. Maybe Dallas can occupy the outside agitators and keep them from BR...

Not sure about the officer, but 15yr was black and Balch Springs is the ghetto...

You could speculate that there was no way for them to know who was behind them while they were apparently trying to save their own asses from gunfire. Perhaps the street was not lit? Until we get all the specifics, everything is speculative.

If there was gunfire, and they were trying to hightail it out of the area of danger, it makes no sense they would try to injure the people that could help them. Especially if they could see the cops (uniforms/cars marked) and/or the officers had their blue/red lights flashing.

Why do you think the officer "should" lose his job?

I gotta say that I am in favor of those departments that are banning shooting at moving cars except for very limited circumstances. The time spent shooting could be much better spent getting the hell out of the way.

Will people protest? I mean, a cop shot a kid. How's that kid any different from Alto...oh wait.

Discharging your firearm into a vehicle leaving a party seems pretty fricking irresponsible.

That's pretty fricked up line of thinking considering Dallas has officers assassinated already b/c the Sterling case they had nothing to do with, you POS. frick You.
