My son is 10 months old and needs to be rocked to sleep. If he stirs a bit in the middle of the night, he cries until we comfort him to sleep. He also still eats in the middle of the night.

Tonight's the night we put our foot down. He's in his crib screaming right now. I'm dying. My wife's more calloused to it than I am since she is usually the one to rock him back to sleep and is ready for him to go down on his own.

I never did it. I always cradled him. You only get so little time with them at that age. They need your touch.

He'll get over it in a few days. Until now, you've just been his pacifier. Stop being the pacifier.

It will get better.

Get some good earplugs and enjoy the ride.

I never had to do this

Put them to bed to sleep in the first place. They have to learn to self soothe

I didn't really want to do it either, but people we know with kids say they did it and that it was tough for a night or two and then it was perfect. No more rocking to go to sleep.

I'm fine with helping in the middle of the night, but he's so particular about falling asleep. It's usually a 45 minute process after the lights go out just to get him down. He has to be in a full deep sleep while being rocked before going to the crib.

My bad, OP. I thought you said 10 weeks. Yeah, it gets better. Just give it time

We were in the same boat. Our son handled it like this:

1st night 40 mins
2nd night 7 mins
3rd night 1 min

Now he gives a token cry but is usually out before we can get to the monitor after leaving his room.

Let the boy cry. It won't hurt him one bit. Make sure he's been taken care of and then go sit on the porch and have a drink or watch a movie or something.

People these days are too coddling.

I let all of my kids learn to fall asleep and go through a good cry. I still had plenty of tender moments and ended up getting a lot of good sleep as well.

Did you worry about them developing trust issues? Our first pediatrician said it's bad to make newborns cry in a crib because it can cause issues later on. Of course, we had reasons to leave that pediatrician....

He never minded going to sleep. Either because he liked it or he knew how to self soothe

He was sleeping 8 hours by 8 weeks
