Credit Card fraud?

I was sent a text on my phone saying they were from my credit card provider asking if I made a purchase to some company I never heard of. They asked me to hit 1 for yes and 2 for no. I hit 2 and they said to call number on the back of the card. SO i call my credit card provider and they say there were not any charges on the card. I do not understand. Does anyone know what else I can do to be safe?

I tried, but it is only a five digit number.

Can you code? Would you be able understand how to utilize an API on the Whitepages? It's easy to use with basic C+ or Java knowledge to track down these pieces of shite.

No, but I know some people who could. Sounds like a fake text?

I finally was able to find some people who this happened to with the same number texting them. Definitely looks like a scam. I will just monitor the card closely. I am about to close the account anyway. Thanks for your responses.

Closing the account will likely lower your credit score, so you might just monitor it closely instead.

You think your CC company would actually text you about a possible fraudulent charge?
Here's a tip for next time....they call

I sometimes get legit emails from cards notifying me of an unusual purchase. Sometimes they ask me to confirm the purchase, other times they say if legit do nothing. I think Discover may have texted me before as well.
So they don't always call.

Sometimes Chase texts me first. If I don't respond, they call.
Happened to me at spearmint rhino on two separate occasions

Capital One has texted me in the past about charges made to my card, especially when I am traveling for work

Capital One hasn't said shite to me before. Mastercard and Amex are very quick to call. Mastercard will stop the charge from going through before I know what's going on. They haven't ever texted because half of the people with a bank account would just dismiss it as spam

AMEX is superb!! I had some a-hole try and buy a car with my numbers, they somehow obtained, I have a feeling to this day an UBER driver somehow got a hold of my info. Anyways, they alerted me with the location in New York and I immediately called the cops. I basically handed the cops a slam dunk case, and of course nothing happened.

The scam might not have anything to do with your credit card. They might have sent the same message to 1000's of phone numbers and the ones that respond are verified as being active phone numbers. They might sell the info to marketers or spam you with their own ad messages. Who knows?

Did the text say who your CC provider was? Did the text give the number for you to call or did it just say to call "the number on the back of your card". If it didn't specify either of these, then that is a huge red flag that the text wasn't actually from your CC provider.

You shouldn't answer stupid shite like that and just do what I do. I just figure it's stupid shite and if it happens to be someone important they will drop me a vmail. And when a voicemail pops up on my phone I check it immediately.

Some credit card companies do this to protect you. They usually include the last 4 digits of your card so you know it's legit. It happened to a friend of mine's mom when she was on her death bed. One of her sons was trying to use her card as she was dying (fraudulently), and he got caught.
