My father in law bought a zero turn lawnmower off of craigslist. Two days after paying for it he brought it to the shop to get the belts and oil changed. While there they told him that one of the pumps was bad and needed to be replaced. He wants the guy he bought it from to give him his money back but I told him he was pretty much screwed by buying it off of craigslist. I am right about this correct? He has no legal action since he bought it off the internet

Shame that pump broke "after" he bought the mower.

Life in the Big City sport.

There is the real possibility that the original owner didn't know about any problem with the pump.

Even so, your dad didn't pay a premium for a warranty, he bought a used mower.

Even in Louisiana (with redhibition) it would be difficult or near impossible to sue for this.

Live and learn.

That's why CL is a risk. Hopefully the deal is so good that any problems won't matter too much.

Just the risk of buying used equipment.

If one can't afford the risk, don't do it.

As is.

That is why I never buy off CL unless I am very familiar with the product.

For instance, I have worked on cars with my dad and brothers for over 30 years. I know how to evaluate a car mechanically. I have bought probably 6 cars off CL.

I also enjoy motorcycles, but I am not a motorcycle mechanic so I buy from someone I trust (bike club friends) or a dealer. I have to pay more but he only way to pay less is to aquire knowledge.

It was your dad's job to get it checked out before he bought it. Doesn't matter a single bit if the guy lied, your dad should've been more responsible with his money. Tell him to break out the checkbook and get over it

Did he test drive it? It's fairly easy to tell a pump is out or going out when driving one.

Most people who buy things on CL end up dead so at least he's alive.

That is the stupidiest advice I've heard in a week or two.

If you call a family friend who is a lawyer about this he/she/it will tell you to "foegettabouttit!".

Caveat emptor
