Had a large crack in my windshield when I woke up. No rock impact that I can see. No crazy temperature changes so it surprises me that all of a sudden it would crack. Was in the garage all night. Nothing wrong with it at 10 pm. Do windshields have the ability to crack from improper installation or something? I have coverage for free replacement, but it's still surprising.

Check for /feet/toe prints on the inside face of the glass. Could be an altogether bigger issue than windshield repair occurring while you were asleep...

In all seriousness....I know a lot of people who have Ford pickups that develop large cracks in the same general area. It's because the body is flexing and the glass can't.

That doesn't usually happen when it's sitting in the garage though.

Follow crack carefully along entirely and find almost microscopic white dot that will not wipe off. There's the rock hit.

Only other possibilities are thermal shifting as you mentioned or pressure point when installed. How long has glass been on car.

Added weight like something laying on it or impact like a ball can trigger a pressure point crack. Summer is a common thermal event with sun induced temperatures up to 170s and night temperatures in 70s! 100 degrees swing is not mild and cumulative effects work on pressure point as well.

You may have had a very small crack that you never noticed before and overnight it turned into a big crack.

Same thing happened to me before.

Check the frit of the windshield (black area on edge) with a flashlight. Rock may have hit there and hard to see. If it's been replaced recently, take it back to the shop who replaced it if no impact point is found. Check the frit from outside and inside of car.

Had the same thing happen to me a few months ago.

Some frickin arseholes threw a whole apple across the parking lot from their apt balcony at my windshield.
I was raging pissed.

I specifically park my truck away from the building to avoid anything from being thrown on it. And still this happens somehow

Car is 6 months old. Didn't see anything when looking after finding the crack. It may be something tiny, but so much so that it's hard to see. Paid for windshield protection since I'm on the interstate all day and the new windshields aren't cheap. No sweat. Just a pain to wake up and find with no explanation.

You said windshield has been replaced before? If not, take it to dealership. If it's been replaced and did that with nothing hitting it then just poor installation or crappy urethane.

Double check then for no impact point. A rock can hit and be size of pen head, really hard to see in the black area. Cracks usually start from edge. You may can even get a magnifying glass with flashlight and double check. If definitely not from a rock hit, then take back to dealership.
