I can tell you are very well versed on this story and definitely qualified to speak confidently on this topic.

Yeah, I agree.

I like the sentiment. The writing is so on the nose it almost kills the message.

Lose the bags of fudge rounds and total control lines and you have a winner. It doesn't sound like art and expression with those, it sounds like loud bitching which, ironically, takes from the song's power.

Love him or hate him, but that is Isbell's genius (and I generally don't align with Isbell's politics). The subtlety and imagery in his lyrics are, for the most part, unmatched. He'll have overt, direct clunkers every now and again like "Save the World", but those are the exception that prove the rule.

This guy is clearly talented but could use an editor. The arrangement and voice are definitely there.

It should be more formulaic like Bro country or that "red dirt" fake urban whiny stuff.

At the same time, if I didn't, I'd make fun of this guy's subpar songwriting. A guy in the sticks bitching about a fat person buying fudge rounds w/ government cheese? Of course, that isn't what he's singing about, but that's exactly my point. Take out a few on the nose lines and you have a powerful song. Until then it sounds like someone on the OT wrote this.

I pretty much agree with everything in your post. The only thing is, I think you almost have to be directly on the nose these days with the people the way they are.

Think about how "A Hard Rain...", another protest song, would play today....

quote:

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it
I saw a black branch with blood that kept dripping
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleeding
I saw a white ladder all covered with water
I saw ten-thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children

The same people criticizing a couple of lyrics in the Rich Men song probably think this is a Christmas song:

quote:

I was following the
I was following the pack
All swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red tied 'round their throats
To keep their little heads
From fallin' in the snow
And I turned 'round and there you go
And, Michael, you would fall
And turn the white snow red as strawberries
In the summertime
I was following the pack
All swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red tied 'round their throats
To keep their little heads
From fallin' in the snow
And I turned 'round and there you go
And, Michael, you would fall
And turn the white snow red as strawberries
In the summertime
I was following the pack
All swallowed in their coats
With scarves of red tied 'round their throats
To keep their little heads
From fallin' in the snow
And I turned 'round and there you go
And, Michael, you would fall
And turn the white snow red as strawberries
In the summertime

The song is fine but let’s not act like it will have staying power. No one will be listening to it in 3 months, much less 3 years

well probably not if you jam it on repeat 24/7.

I've listened to it a few times but am not gonna just play it repeatedly. His album will do fine though and he has a nice head start.

I don’t know. The rest of his stuff is pretty good too. He may have just gotten discovered by the masses.

I didn’t find a bad song. Quite good style as far as I’m concerned.
Hope he keeps making noise with folks like me.

The rise of Childers, Bradshaw, Arlo McKinley and others are making that particular style crowded. He will need to write some good stuff. This song will help him stay in the spotlight for a bit, but there are some fantastic fantastic artists out there doing similar stuff.

Time will tell. Interestingly, he doesn't play his resophonic guitar in his lap or bottleneck style (i.e. slide). Perhaps playing it conventionally is more prevalent than I thought.
