Cost to replace upper and lower ball joints

went to the dealership dealership to get a turn signal assembly replaced. Got my tire pressure checked while there. They check the alignment and said that the ball joints (upper and lower) are bad. Parts and labor were estimated around $1,600. I know dealerships typically overprice this type of work but I'm wondering what a realistic price is to have these replaced (if they even need replacing at all).

Generally (from my experience) you can get stuff done at other reputable places (not chain repair places) for half of what the dealer wants.

Yeah that's the first time I've ever been to the dealership for work. Evidently they were the only people who could replaced a turn signal assembly in Charlotte though so I had no other options.

Holy shite, I need to get into the ball joint replacing business. I've replaced them on the side of a hill in the middle of nowhere in the mud while its raining for free.

Making that squeaking noise? I had similar problems with similar car. Got mine done for about $750.

I don't notice any noise. I didn't know anything was wrong. I bought the car dirt cheap in Nov 2013 and haven't replaced the tires. The tires are now worn out so I'm assuming the ball joints aren't even that bad. I know the dealer is just a typical dealership crook but I'm really just curious as to how far off base his pricing is compared to others if I hypothetically do need new ball joints.

Yeah I bought my Explorer real cheap as well. About 2 years ago it started squeaking some when I would go over bumps and it was the ball joints.
Like I said I got mine done for about $750, I wish I was even slightly handy at car stuff because watching youtube videos it didnt seem that hard to replace them yourself. But I am sure others can chime in on that.
The beast still runs like a champ though.

why replace just the ball joints when the entire control arm costs less than $40 and is cheaper labor to replaces the entire control arm than it is to drill rivets on ball joints or press them in and out

frick that. You can get them for like $15 a piece. Can get new control arms with joints already in them for $40-100 a piece.
Labor would probably be cheaper doing the arms. You're gonna get an alignment either way.

looked up the prices on rockauto and they were under $40 for all 4 ball joints. Under $10 a piece.
Must be a PITA to get them in and out. I've only done the lower ball joints on my minivan and they weren't hard at all. Hardest part was getting the hubnut off.

Like other posters have said, do a bit of research and do it yourself. The parts are probably around $100 - $150 and you can rent a ball joint press for free from Autozone or other parts house. Then all you need it an alignment.
But before you do all this a second opinion on the condition of the ball joints wouldn't hurt either.

My old lower ones had a weird shaped cup and I had to heat them up and beat on them with a sledgehammer. Ghetto press
Side note, I got one upper from autozone a few months ago, and the mother fricker is already bad

I would check with surgeons in the area. I didn't realize balls had joints.
