If he doesn't have backups then he deserves this. I mean wtf
And that is the truth.
Disclaimer: Hillary Clinton's personal domain seemingly had none of these safeguards.

All of the back ups were externally connected drives which this line of code seeks out since there was no directory specified.
Someone on TD should run this on their network and see if it is true...
and report back.

I worked nights as a system operator in grad school. My last duty every night was to take the backup tape and drive it across town to an offsite storage location. Pain in the arse, but it prevented such as this.
ETA: and we had to get special clearance from our regulating agency to have our backup site in the same town. Best practice was to have it further away.

The original ServerFault thread is now saying this is a hoax

This is just not true. And if he ran a webhost and had his entire company on external hard drives connected to the server....

rm -fr is not going to recurse to other mounted partitions.
and they are saying it did. if that WAS the case he'd have to be logged in with root permissoins under the ~/ dir and type rm-fr. the amount of insanity to do that is unreal.

I helped one of my dad's friends move servers from ATL to Tallahassee for a large news company. He backed up everything twice, we loaded the original servers into a Uhaul, then I followed in a car with one backup, while my friend was behind me with the other. The whole ordeal was quite stressful, no sleep for over 24 hours, and definitely made me respect what those guys do.

That's the worst mistake since the brain of "Abby Normal" was used in Frankenstein's monster. If only he had used the brain of Hans Delbrook.

The fact the dude has no backups should be the real issue here.
Hence the thread title: Corporate Darwin Award
