Cordyceps Are The Zombie Virus Of The Insect World

Basically they're a fungus that infects insects through spores and takes over their bodies. After the insect dies, the fungus grows out of their body and releases more spores to infect other insects. The idea of the fungus evolving to be able to infect human comes up in the game The Last of Us.

I see those scenes in my nightmares. The idea that a fungus can infect an insect, cause it to completely change its behavior and then use the insect's body to infect other insects is one of the most creepy and chilling things I've ever heard of.
