Construction began in Chile on Friday on the European Extremely Large Telescope, which when completed will be the world's largest optical telescope, some five times larger than the top observing instruments in use today.

The size of the ELT has the potential to transform our understanding of the universe, say its backers, with its main mirror that will measure some 39 meters (43 yards) across.

Located on a 3,000 meter-high mountain in the middle of the Atacama desert, it is due to begin operating in 2024.

Among other capabilities, it will add to and refine astronomers' burgeoning discoveries of planets orbiting other stars, with the ability to find more smaller planets, image larger ones, and possibly characterize their atmospheres, a key step in understanding if life is present.

Wikipedia page on ELT

The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is an astronomical observatory and the world's largest optical/near-infrared extremely large telescope now under construction. Part of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), it is located on top of Cerro Armazones in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. The design comprises a reflecting telescope with a 39.3-metre-diameter (126 foot) segmented primary mirror and a 4.2-metre-diameter secondary mirror, and will be supported by adaptive optics, six laser guide star units and multiple large science instruments.[8] The observatory aims to gather 13 times more light than the largest optical telescopes existing in 2014, and be able to correct for atmospheric distortions. It has around 256 times the light gathering area of the Hubble Space Telescope and, according to the ELT's specifications, would provide images 16 times sharper than those from Hubble. [9]

I didn't realize R2D2 also served as a galactic telescope. Bottom pic, 4th from the right. He snuck right into that pic.

Cool. Can it see where the universe started 6,000 years ago?

I can't even begin to imagine images 16 times sharper than Hubble, this will be amazing.

I thought Hubble was automatically better than any telecope on earth just by being in space

I, for one, am not going to pretend I care.

The world is flat. What in the world is anyone spending that kind of money of something like that?

That was also my understanding. The interference from the atmosphere has to limit terrestrial scopes.

For reference though, Hubble has a 7.9 ft mirror, the ELT is 129'.

It seems when they take a new step in improving space-observing technology, we eventually take a giant leap forward in new finds.

I'm looking forward to what we can learn once we can put one of these bad boys on the moon.

I've been interested in this and when it would start after seeing a short documentary on it.

Also, such a creative name for the world's largest telescope.

The JWST will be game changer. Set to launch next year. It will rest at the L2 point. The European's need to recognize.

Funny we look for alien life in space when there is an enormous amount in the bottom of the Oceans we know nothing about. The recently discovered Flamboyant Cuttlefish.
