Missouri side, it's definitely on the decline

I don't agree with this. I will say the more southern Missouri side burbs are in decline (and I wouldn't live there) while the northern ones like Gladstone and Liberty are on the rise. Definitely northern side if you choose Missouri for a burb of KC.

I have a ton of buddies up there. It's a pretty fun city, lots of wild nights and never gotten into any trouble. Thank god.

There's some racial tension up there but it's died down considerably. Like everywhere stay out of the ghetto and the trashy run-down poor parts of town and you'll likely never have any problems.

Olathe and Johnson County, KS are probably where I'd choose to live if I was moving up there, or get into an area where Google Fiber is.

Lots of entertainment options all the major concerts and shows go through there. Sporting KC has a nice following too. Good outdoor activities are a short drive away and Colorado is just a jaunt across I-70 for your other recreational needs.

Chicago, MPLS, DSM, aren't far either for more Midwestern flair.

I'm biased, but I really think it's one of the most underrated cities in America

If you want to live in a bubble and are a snob Overland Park is your choice. Whoever said Independence is crazy it sucks. Lee's Summit is what I'd recommend especially if you enjoy going to HS football games. Blue Springs is solid too. KC as a city is underrated...good sports town, great BBQ, good people.

Pretty boring for me, other than the good BBQ.

Went to a few bars and it just wasn't me. I want beer and country music and it was blues music and wine. I just walked to the nearby stuff by my hotel. I was only there 2 nights so it was a small sample size. Royals game was a good time.

The people of the Midwest are in general very nice, and the best of the best are in KC if you ask me. The barbecue is amazing (Joe's on the Kansas side), there are enough pro and college sports to give you your fix if that's what you're into, and the old downtown and jazz districts are great places to putz around and soak in an underrated history. KC is an underrated city, and I think you'd love it.

I grew up in Independence and half my family is in Overland Park now. If you are going to raise a family the answer is easy, Overland Park is one of the best places in the country for that. I would not live on the Missouri side, it's definitely on the decline. Overland Park is very nice if you like suburbia. If you want something funkier Lawrence is good, I lived there for a couple of years. Friendly people in Kansas City, I find it a bit boring but would take it over Houston and if I was raising a family it would be near the top of my list.

This is not a fully accurate statement. Let me break it down:

1) Blue Valley school district (Overland Park) is overrun with drugs. All the rich kids love the white powder. Schools are nice and clean, though. Teachers are solid.
2) Olathe is the growing option if you want cheaper, nicer housing than Overland Park and a better school district. It is a bit more quiet despite its massive growth.
3) Everything in North KC (MO side) is nice. Lots of affordable housing and good schools.
4) Lee Summit (MO Side) is the fastest growing area in the metro next to Olathe. Lee Summit has great schools, too.

Just an FYI, where you choose to live will matter. From corner to corner of the metro, it is a good 60+ miles.

There is plenty of country music and beer in KC. Power and light district's biggest bar is country if I'm not mistaken.

I love living in KC. If you are more into the younger nightlife type scene I'd recommend staying near downtown and the River Market area. If you want quieter suburban life I'd recommend the northland (Zona Rosa Area or Liberty are two good places to look into). If you travel a lot for work the northland is closer to the airport. If you want to live a little bit outside the city check out Platte City, Kearney, or Smithville (decent fishing).

I don't know why people are saying there is nothing to do here. We have an NFL team, an MLB team, an MLS team, plus three local division I college teams. There are tons of concerts. Good food. Good night life. Good hunting and fishing. If you like to travel you're smack in the middle of the country, which makes pretty much every place a reasonable flight or drive. I don't know what these people are looking for that they can't find in KC.

JP-I lived in KC for two years after Katrina. Lived in Lee's Summit. Stayed with my sister for a few months til I got my own place. The people were very compassionate & kind to me & every time I met someone they tried to help, not just with "Oh, I'm sorry" but with everything from job offers (I was working) to offers for home cooked meals, watching football on weekends, etc.
Vast majority are rock solid people. Its a very clean, nice city. although it is a little boring. They're great with bbq & steaks; fresh seafood is a stretch up there!
Check out Leawood or Lenexa, KS-Gladstone, Blue Springs, MO for living-good schools, good neighborhoods. Overland Park is a bunch of entitled snobs.
You'll love the geography; Colorado is driving distance & there's plenty to see/do in the Ozarks, and if you like hunting/fishing/hiking/camping. As someone from NOLA, I thought the winters were brutal, buy consider where I came from!
Several Chiefs/Royals games are a must. Arrowhead & Kaufman are simply some of the best stadiums around!! Plus Omaha is only about a 5/6 hour drive, so when the Tigers make it next time, its a much easier trip!
I had some great times up there and have some great memories. Good solid people, good solid city. I'll always be mindful and thankful for the compassion/kindness shown to me after Katrina, things in terribly short supply in this world. Cheers!
