considering a move to Kansas City

I've visited there a couple times, but don't know much about it. Cold weather is not a problem, and I would enjoy the place, geographically. I like the Midwest.
We're in Houston now, and we like a lot of what Houston has, but we're ready to make a move, so that is a good thing. A smaller city is our goal, so obviously that is Kansas City.
Thanks in advance, for any insight!

They've got some crazy little women there, and I'm gonna get me one!

I enjoyed the 48 hrs I spent there. Nice people, clean city, good BBQ.

P.S. any crime issues I should be wary of? Or just normal rates for a city of a half-million?
Or is the place like Ferguson or Milwaukee, in that neighborhoods would blow if if a violent thug gets capped for trying to kill a cop?

Overland Park would be like the Woodlands in Houston.

Kansas City is a pretty bleak and boring big city. Sure, places like Arthur Bryant's and Oklahoma Joe'a give it a nice BBQ scene, but other than that, it's just a boring town.
Live in Lawrence, KS and just commute to KC

Typical nice Burbs with decent schools here and there.
Traffic is actually tolerable, IMO.
MCI is in bumfrick which is ridiculous.
Good sports town.
Can get cold as shite as windy as it is.
For some reason I've found the women are very prone to giving up on themselves during the cold months. Not near as much as Topeka, though. Sheesh that's a dog town if there ever was one.
Pretty good food scene in terms of trying different spots to see what you like.
Astros suck.

If I were to move to Kansas City area it would be Gladstone or Independence Missouri.

Every time I've visited my sister there it's been awesome. Nice, clean city with plenty to do. I'll probably try to do residency there.
They live near Leewood, KS which has some absolutely ridiculous houses.

lived in Olathe for a couple years as a kid and I really liked living there. Went to the city quite a bit.
It's an underrated city in terms of quality of life. Suburbs are very affordable

Lived just outside Kansas City when I was stationed at Whiteman AFB from 2012-2015.
I'm not a cold weather fan, but it's nice most of the year. People are a little less friendly than here in TX, but not hostile. Like has been said itt already, Overland Park has a very similar vibe to suburban Houston. Downtown, Power & Light District is pretty cool, and my wife was a big fan of Country Club Plaza, of course.
Highly recommended going to an event at the Kauffman Center, and catching a game at Arrowhead and/or Kauffman Stadium is a must (I really wasn't a baseball fan until I lived there and started following the Royals--very cool fanbase I now consider myself a part of). Also Kansas Speedway if you like NASCAR is a pretty cheap/entertaining event 2x a year (even if the track itself is a little boring).
There's nothing for me up there after the military, so I doubt I'll be back (I prefer living in SA), but I didn't hate my time near KC at all. Recommend checking out the Mizzou board on the SEC Rant and getting more insider details from those posters

good info, thanks! To clarify, schools and pro sports would be of zero importance to me. However, being within four hours of college football in Lawrence, Columbia, Manhattan, Lincoln and Ames would be taken advantage of.

Kansas City metro is really spread out too. Liberty is the most northern connected burb and is getting built up pretty well now. You could also move to Kearney (just north of Liberty on I-35 if you want to be like 7 minutes disconnected from the city. KC is getting a lot of people moving to it it seems. But it seems like that is happening to Des Moines to, so maybe it's just a midwest thing. If I was to move to KC I would probably go Liberty so I'm close to the countryside adventures and can still play in the city easily.
Of course if you like trout fishing maybe you want to be on the southern side of KC so you can make a quicker escape to the Ozarks. If you like hunting you probably want to be on the northern side of the river, as the animals are more corn fed that a way and typically bigger. Also, Iowa is a shotgun state for deer so really the closer to Iowa the bigger the deer.
KC is an underrated city for culture. Arrowhead is probably the pinnacle of NFL tailgating.
KC seems to not have the big city problems with protesting. It has a lot of features of a big city while not having too many negatives of a big city. Like I said earlier, it is pretty spread out so congestion doesn't get too bad imo unless you go to KC proper. MCI is an awesome airport too, it is very quick in and out so I would not trade it even though someone else mentioned it in a negative light. There is a city income tax since it is a border city. So you may want to think about that depending on where you live and where you work, but maybe that is irrelevant.

I grew up in Independence and half my family is in Overland Park now. If you are going to raise a family the answer is easy, Overland Park is one of the best places in the country for that. I would not live on the Missouri side, it's definitely on the decline. Overland Park is very nice if you like suburbia. If you want something funkier Lawrence is good, I lived there for a couple of years. Friendly people in Kansas City, I find it a bit boring but would take it over Houston and if I was raising a family it would be near the top of my list.
