Lafayette is about to be in a good position with the three new companies opening shop there next year: Perficient, Enquero and CGI.

I have worked for CGI and my experience was very good FWIW.

Twitter, GitHub, Hulu, Groupon, Bloomberg, Square, and many others are built on Ruby.

And they are all moving away from it in some stage currently citing how inefficient it is. Twitter in particular has been very vocal about this.

Twitter didn't like the scalability of it, which seems to be working fine for other tech giants. There aren't many skilled rails devd out there and some of the biggest companies in the world use the language. There is a ton of money and job security in ruby. Shitty .NET developers are a dime a dozen

You can also write Metasploit plugins with Ruby and use them to steal bitcoins from China. It's a very relevant language in the security community for other reasons as well and I don't anticipate that changing any time soon either.

ETA: The tech job market sucks in Louisiana in general, regardless of GE Cap, CSC, IBM and whoever else. It's not even in the sense that there are none, for me it's more the quality of the job. All of the positions that these companies offer are stepping stones to real jobs in larger markets, nothing more.

Shitty any language developers are a dime a dozen.

They always seem to be the ones with the most ridiculous salary expectations too.

It's anecdotal, but the difference in salaries that I've noticed between Baton Rouge/New Orleans/Laffy and Houston or Atlanta are huge.

I'm not sure if that's anecdotal. It's well known that those bigger markets offer higher salaries in just about every field.

Why would you ever NEED a Ruby guy?

Ruby is one of the hottest web dev tools there is.

in year 9. Its going to die, just like all programming jobs die.

C# or Java are the only real routes to go currently,

Java and C# are a strong market. If you always want an IT job, learn a dominant ERP/CRM app - SAP, Oracle, SFDC. There is a large shortage of those already, and its getting worse.
