Someone please explain to me why this is supposed to be a better way of teaching math. I could see them wanting the kid to illustrate both 5 sets of 3 and 3 sets of five, but not the assertion that 5 sets of 3 is the only solution.

Seriously, I feel like communists designed this just to teach kids to be more obedient to dictates, rather than being critical, intelligent thinkers.
quote:

The web has kicked up a storm after a child was marked as incorrect for saying "5+5+5=15"on a grade school math test.

The question simply asked to use repeated addition to solve 5x3. The math question is a typical question set by the Common Core for third graders. However, under the guidelines for the Common Core, you supposed to understand 5x3 as “five groups of three” not “three groups of five.”

The child was then marked down again for drawing six rows of four instead of four rows of six.

The image was originally uploaded to Imgur and Reddit around a week ago where many commenters were infuriated by the overly pedantic “by-the-book” thinking. One popular comment on the Reddit post said, “So now you just took a kid who was doing well at math, confused them, and turned them off of it with your continuous nit picking of shite that doesn't matter.”

Common core is pretty much everywhere.

I'm glad I avoided that shite.

I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion, and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.

There is so much wrong with that article.

The most egregious being "Common Core Math".

Common Core is not a method! Why can't people understand that?

Uh, a 4x6 matrix isn't the same as a 6x4 one. And 5x3 IS 3*3*3*3*3. Y'all are ate up with it.

ETA, yea 3+3...

What's so difficult about 5 groups of 3? The first number is the number of groups, the second is the number of items per grouping. Who wasn't taught that in school? I went to private catholic school and learned that

When it's just 5x3, we were taught that it's 3 5's or 5 3's.

Bear in mind, this is a third grade math test in the OP.
