Eliminate the Department of Education and stop subsidizing unsustainable extensions of credit to any dumbfrick who applies?

I agree.
New editions coming out every year with little to no difference and required are insane. But the textbook buyback cycle industry is huge now. It's not going anywhere.

Meh. If I help write a textbook I should be able to charge for however much I feel it's worth.

Yes.
It took me a while to realize the students werent learning material because they werent buying the textbooks and didnt have that additional resource between class meetings. And they didnt know where to start when it came to studying or asking the right questions.

Buy the international version for a 1/10 of the price on eBay.

Not the least bit surprised.

I agree with what you said. I was so broke in college I would buy old editions and do just fine in the class. Most of the time the chapters were just switched around. If I didn't have the correct information I would just photocopy the pages from a friend's book. That was free also I had access to a copier at work.

People that bitch about things like this are the ones that are too stupid to profit from them. Making money is sssssoooo easy, you just get into a market that is exploding and collect checks.

While I agree that you should charge whatever you feel is appropriate (and gain or lose money based on the feelings of the consumer) the problem here is a middle-man. College students and healthcare customers alike have no means by which to negotiate with the suppliers of goods and services. Their butts are beings sodomized by insurance companies and faculty. Price indexes have been severely distorted by the disparate distance between final consumers and suppliers - with government regulated bodies (ie aforementioned faculty and insurance companies) being the beneficiaries.

Can't give you an exact percentage, but I recall it being extremely similar.
Basically, since the inception of the DoEd, and the advent of federal loans, tuition has SKYROCKETED, even compared to real wages adjusted for inflation.
Who would have thought that non-meritorious lending would lead to increased demand? Who would have known that colleges and universities would have learned to increase prices due to guaranteed income?

A book I needed last semester was $16 on Amazon. Since the teacher didn't tell us what the book was until the first day of summer school, I had to buy it USED from the bookstore for $132.
I also spent $379 on another book that was new, but I am going to keep it

I can understand why the sciences change books pretty often. But history, math, accounting, etc. isn't changing enough to warrant the need for a new textbook every year.
I don't blame the publishing companies and authors for charging a high price. I just don't see why teachers use the newest books. Do they cut deals with the publishing companies?
