I signed up my kid for 5-6 year-old flag football. After the first practice, the coach's son bumped to 7-8's. Obviously, he doesn't want to coach a team his son isn't on, so I somehow become the coach or else there would be none. I played some tackle in high school, but that's it. The team has about a dozen kids and we practice Mon & Wed with a game against other playgrounds on Fri.

What is a good source for ideas to develop them and keep it fun?
What should I expect them to be able to accomplish?
Should I single out the 2-3 obvious athletes for QB or some other position?

I BS'ed my way through the first practice because I found out 5 minutes before I was coaching, but I want to have a plan for future practices and games.

Looks like the flag pulling will make the biggest difference in games. I have thought of variations of tag, last man standing, etc. for flag pulling practice.

Thanks for any help.

At that age don't expect the focus last long. Keep drills short and fun. Otherwise you'll lose them.

Most of your TDS will be on running plays with misdirection.

Should be a blast if your other parents are not a holes.

A fun drill we do in tackle but would translate nicely to flag is sharks and minnows.

Start with 2 sharks and when they pull a flag that kid becomes a shark.

Repeat until all minnows are sharks.

Work on flag pulling and working together with other defenders.

Teach them only 4 or 5 basic plays. But each play, have like 3 options. Handoff, pitch, reverse, qb keeper. Practice them over and over, switching up who gets the ball only. It will drive other team and coaches crazy and you will crush. Kids that age are easily faked out on defense and will never know who has the ball.

Teach team to really sell the fakes and you will profit.

5-6 year olds? Just tell them to run in the right direction. If you can do that, you've already won.

I had to coach pee wee football one Saturday so I had them float concrete on a new patio for me. Good way to build upper body strength

Check out US Soccer's coaching site. Sure, it's a different sport but they have plenty of tips for working with kids of all ages (and their parents) that aren't specific to the sport.
