My first two cars were stick shifts and I do enjoy them but I haven't had one in years. Living in Florida and dealing with traffic takes almost all the fun out of a stick shift.

But there's nothing better than a stick shift with complete power and throttle control during a nice cruise to the beach or up winding roads in the mountains.

My uncle has both a GTO and a Corvette. While I doubt he ever gets rid of the Corvette he might sell the GTO in a few years and I'll definitely be seriously interested.

I enjoy stick shifts but only for roads trips or rural driving. I would still want a car with an automatic transmission for the day to day driving in traffic.

Glad to see CNN is consistent. They manage to be wrong about everything.
I understand that sentiment, and you might think CNN is the worst, but then you might find MSNBC saying, 'Hold my beer, uh, make that wine spritzer.'

I don't know what's worse, the article content or the writing style.

What a useless human being. I hope he can redeem himself before his time us up.

Agreed. If you limit yourself to auto, your rental rates will be higher. I just checked Eurocar, and the auto rates are twice of manual of the same size (in SNN). However, it's $7 a day versus $13 a day, which is shockingly cheap. A while ago, it was hundreds of dollars more a week for an auto, I'm sure it will return to that eventually.

How am I going to train my kids on stick without renting a car? Any suggestions? (Drive a 2022 F250.)

I have always loved stick, while not being a driver like most of you, it forces you to pay attention. Number one goal for kids. Pay attention when driving.

After a couple weeks of driving a stick it becomes second nature. Stick doesn’t make you pay any more attention than an automatic.

Bring it back with hand-cranked windows, manual locks, cloth seats, a radio that’s simply a USB dock + 3.5mm out in a single cab truck for around $15-20K

Too nice. How bout a radio and a tape player that you can jerry rig to play CDs on your discman

My first car was a used Honda with a 5 speed…I thrashed that thing within an inch of its life. Also, manuals are real handy when your battery dies and you’re too broke to buy a replacement…just always park on a hill.

Manual shifts are almost theft proof.

Was looking at a used truck a private seller was getting rid of a couple months ago. While I was there, I noticed a little Ford Fiesta hatchback and it was in good shape and had a manual transmission. I asked if it was for sale and if I could drive it. It was and I drove it and ended up giving him the cash for it about 10 minutes after I drove it.

It was cheap and it is in great shape and has low miles for its age. Probably gonna give it to my daughter in a couple years, but until then, I'll pretend I'm in a rally car a couple times a week when I drive it .

That article is borderline creepy. “Journalism” is really in the shitter.

Driving a manual is more fun. It’s funny people complain about navigating traffic in one but the only time I genuinely prefer an automatic is really long road trips. I’d probably give the automatic a very slight edge in that department.

I’ve had my current manual for 9 years and I’m not looking for a change. I’ll get an automatic when it’s time to replace because of my wife but I won’t be thrilled about it.

ETA: I see people talking about driving trucks with a stick. The truck I learned to drive in had a really finicky transmission. You had to whisper sweet nothings to get it to find its gear and in the winter it was super notchy. My current Civic shifts like butter though. Not sure if they’ve just improved with time and it has nothing to do with truck v car. Not a gear head but I’ve always wondered.
