I am a big time ACW history buff, probably my favorite time period in history to study. Let me pose this scenario for discussion;
How would things have played out if Lee had not surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox and instead melted away (with the rest of Confederate forces still on the field) and commenced with an insurgency campaign against Union forces? How long could they have sustained such a movement and what, if any, goals could they have realistically achieved?

This. Although they always had 'skirmishes' guerilla warfare was just not as accepted as a 'formal' manner to wage war. Plus the Leaders at this point wanted to avoid the noose.
Plus you would have needed popular support for it to be a successful strategy & by then most Southerners were probably war weary.
Add to that the demographics of the deep South (mostly Black ) plus Union troops would prove an uphill battle .

Everything said is pretty much right, including the vindictiveness with which the dead were buried there.
Got to be the greatest backfire, or "reverse scald" in the history of the world.....
The union powers say "Hey, lets bury all the dead troops here, and desecrate the grounds of General Lee", when in reality, they should have said "hey, lets create the most revered ground in the country."
